Hi all,

First time poster but long time reader of this forum.

I have a 2005 Honda Accord EX V6 leather with 120,000 miles on it; original owner. I had my transmission fluid changed for the first time at 100,000 miles while I was having my timing belt and water pump replaced. At the time the mechanic didn't realize that it was the first transmission fluid change otherwise he would not have drained it.

Since then every time I get my oil changed at a different service center they try to talk me into having the fluid suctioned out of the transmission to ensure 100% removal of the fluid. I keep telling them I don't want it done but want to be sure I am doing the right thing. They keep telling me the fluid is black instead of red. I can remember being a kid and my dad telling me that if you don't get it changed by a certain point you can actually do more damage than good.

I would do simple drain and fills (three quarts at a time), until the fluid is red again. I would definitely not allow someone to do a "power flush" on the transmission. You don't want to force the fluid through the small passages, but a simple drain and fill would not do that.

Is there an online resource to find the procedure for a DIY fluid change? Is there a filter on these transmissions? Should that be changed too?

Yes, there is a filter. Yours is probably just a hunk of metal at this point. Dealerships don't usually have the filter in stock, because they rarely change them. Apparently, Honda doesn't think the filter needs to be changed, but I disagree. I order my parts online, and change the filter and fluid myself. I'm sure there is a link with a how-to somewhere, but I don't have one handy. I have the recall (jet kit) installed on my tranny, so I just unbolt the bracket for the jet kit, pull the end of the pipe out, then fill through that hole. I may be able to find a how-to with a search.

I am going to drain, fill, drain, fill, drain, fill this weekend to get a good amount of new fluid into the transmission and torque converter and go from there.
