Default 2004 Accord 5w20 or Mobile One 5w30

What is the concencus on using Mobil One 5w30 over the new Honda 5w20. A locoal Honda shop assured me that the Mobil is much better and that 5W20 is just for Fuel Economy reasons and CAFE Standards. Is this the case?

Mobil 1 is synthetic and costs a good deal more than regular oil. It is better but whether you want to shell out the extra cash for it is up to you. I've heard that once you switch to synthetic it's not a good idea to switch back to regular oil.

I believe Mobil 1 5W-30 goes for around $4.30 a quart. Not sure about the 5W-20 but it's probably less.

Honda oil is dino... Mobil 1 is synthetic... so of course Mobil 1 is going to be more expensive.

I've heard the same reasoning behind Honda's switch to 5w20. But you can still use 5w30 all you like... You'll never notice the difference.

Mobil One cost more and I have been doing 5k change intervals using Wix and OEM filters. I'm just concerned now after hearing from a friend how a local dealer told him 5w30 enve synthetic will damage the engine long term from poor circulation at start up. I think it's a bunch of crap, but wanted to see if anyone on here had come feedback. I am very happy with Mobile One so far

The 5w-20 is a synthetic blend.
Mobil 1 is a full synthetic (as far as we know)

the 5w-20 is more for honda's fuel economy and such.

I stay away from it because i think its too thin for hot weather.

the mobil 1 is far superior....just remember....once you start, don't switch back to regular oil.

Why not switch back to regular oil after using synthetic?

where are you guys getting your info from????

ok i work at a lube chain (not a franchise) any way. all we use is mobil 1.

mobil one comes in regular conventional, semi synthetic(which is the blend), and the full synthetic.

the difference between weight is... when switching to a thicker weight will cool down engine more, thicker viscosity, but if you go too thick the gears engine will overwork itself. if its too thin the oil will burn faster and eventually lose its viscosity. going from 5w20 to 5w30 is not too big of a jump. when someone said that their mechanic said switching viscosity's will cause the engine in the long run to have sluggish starts and poor circulation he is correct... but probably didn't elaborate enough for you. when switching oils it is recommended that you stick to whatever oil you are using or stick to that weight ie. 5w30/10w30 stick to the 30's. if your going to switch from synthetic to conventional(which alot of people do when they come in, because of $$ issues i guess or theories) you should consider doing an engine flush.

some what vague but im just clearing up most of the misconceptions.

and btw behind the mobil one box/bottle itll say that synthetic is full compatible with conventional oils.

to the poster... i say... if your a granny driver and pamper your car just stick to dealership recommendations.

if your a little bit more of an aggressive driver go with 5/30 10/30 when weather is more cold use 5/30 and when hot use 10/30.(summer= 10w30 winter 5w30 and this is personal preference)

14k without an oil change because youre gonna rebuild your already weak f23... you gonna replace the main bearings? rod bearings? get a new crank, maybe rods... bore, and hone your block, fit new pistons...

Good discussion, if anybody could elaborate more I would appreciate it.

I'm going to get my first oil change at 1k miles ('05) because I read that it was good to do so to get rid of any metal shavings and what not after the break in period. The manual reccommends using conventional 5W-20 oil. I was considering using full synthetic Mobil 1 from the start because I thought it would be better in the long run but after reading gaydm.accord's post, I don't know. Only thing that bothers me is getting full synthetic oil changes is going to be costly. I drive pretty slow most of the time to save gas and I feel it's not worth it to speed and get a ticket. This car has to last me a long time and I don't intend on doing anything other than some minor modifications so what do you suggest?

I live in SoCal so the weather doesn't change much during the seaons.

you can save even more money by doing yoru oil changes yourself.

off topic
heres another tip... when buying oil at the autoshop(autozone, pepboys, etc) tell them that you are a student in an auto class and theyll give you discount on it. save maybe 3 bucks.

Good tip.

I searched "synthetic vs conventional". Someone uses synthetic blend but they mix it themself, said it wasn't worth it buying semi synthetic because it may only contain like 10% synthetic oil. Any opinions on this?

So far I'm leaning towards using full synthetic.

EDIT: After reading this https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=211065 I think I'm just gonna go with conventional every 3k.

i was under the impression that mobil 1 was only full synthetic, and that the conventional and semi-synthetic blends were just mobil (without the "1"). i've never seen mobil 1 in anything but full synthetic.

I use Mobile synthetic in my '99 Accord, change the oil about 25k mile intervals. I have 190k and climbing. I do burn a quart in less then 5k miles, but it has been that way as far back as I remember. IMO changing synthetic at normal intervals is a waste of $.

The only problems I have had are electrical. If changign the oil as i do were a bad thing then how many miles would you expect the engine to last for? there is to much religion in car maintanence> Show me evidence that modern oil needs to be changed more often.
