i had the same problem with my 96'. i replaced my VSS hoping it was the issue but it turned out to be my speedo on the cluster. i replaced it with the one i purchase from a honda salvage yard and it works. I know it was pretty tricky trying to figure out which is which but i did replaced them both and its good now. hope this helps.

I responded to a post about this earlier.

If your cruise control works, it's not the VSS it's the actual gauge cluster.

I had a similar problem and replaced the VSS with a brand spanking new one and then replaced the circuitry ont he back of the speedo and now it works

It must be that time of year mine just went AGAIN!

!@#$%^&*()

I'm tired of buying gauge clusters, does anybody know the part number in the guage cluster that needs to be replaced? Mine jumps around then stops, but when it is working my cruise control will come on.

This is really annoying.

If it is not the VSS, then it is actually the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) in back of the speedometer guage. The PCB can be easily pulled off the back of the guage by hand, no tools necessary (once the instrument cluster is removed).

If it is the guage, I recommend to go get another used cluster, and just pulled and replace the PCB; that way you keep the same odometer reading and the rest of the instrument cluster.

BTW: Since you ask for the part number, here are links; which is for the separate speedometer:

Is there no way to repair the PCB? I have three guage cluster's right now and none of them work. I didn't see the PCB avail on their site so I'd have to purchase the entire Speedo assembly.

You can't just buy the PCB from those sites. If you want to try to repair the PCB, try touching each solder point briefly with a soldering iron (that may or may not fix it, if it was just a bad solder point ). If not, it could be a bad components on the board.

I recommend to just buy a used instrument cluster from a salvage yard or Ebay, then take the PCB off. The cluster does not have to exactly match your model's trim level (just make sure it matches the engine, i.e., I4 or V6).

Wow I can't remember the last time I broke out the soldering iron... Well I guess I can try it since I have three to choose from. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Yeah that's what I did the first time it went. Since then I tried to use the guage cluster from the car I just bought and it was a no go, so at this point I'm just tired of pulling this stupid car apart only to have it not work.
