Question on shift lock
I have a 1991 Honda Accord EX (automatic) I recently put the shift into drive and
immediately smelled burning electronics. I now cannot get the shift to move unless I first push the shift lock release. Even then the car is sluggish in drive. I need to start off in 1, then 2, then D3 and finally D4. I do not see any failure lights such as "check engine" on the instrument cluster. Any idea as to what has failed ?
I replaced the Back-Up Light Switch/Neutral Safety Switch but still encoutered the same problem.

There is a switch in the console under the shifter that probably took a crap. Dirt and stuff like spilled beverages tend to mess them up.
As for causing your car to be sluggish, I'm not aware of any other interaction with the switch that would cause that. Maybe you are just paranoid about it or are just first paying enough attention to notice it.
Or maybe the ECU thinks the car is in park?
