Is my ignition switch going bad?
I have a '92 LX. Yesterday, I start it up; it starts fine, but the "brake" light stays on. Then I notice the climate controls don't work at all. The radio wouldn't work either. I stopped, and when I put the car in park ( auto trans.), a terrible grinding noise came from underhood. I tried shutting the car off, but the ignition was stuck!
After fiddling with it for a minute, I got it turned off. After checking things out, I realized the ignition had somehow stuck in the "start" position, and didn't snap back into "run" like it should. The grinding noise was the starter trying to engage the flexplate while the car was running. The radio and climate controls wouldn't work because the car was in "start" mode.
I've never had this happen before or since with this car or any other car. Could this mean the ignition switch is going bad, or can I just spritz a little WD-40 on it?
