I had timing belt, water pump and all three seals replaced on 97 accord I bought. I had the work done because the balancer shaft seal was leaking. I went under the car and I'm still getting oil on bottom of timing cover. The mechanic said the crank shaft might have a groove in it, and it is causing the leak. Is this possible or is he just pulling my crank? Could they have improperly put the seals in or is there something else that could be leaking?

it is possible for the crank to have been scratched during either the removal or install of the seal when it was replaced. That would cause a leak, yes. Thats why it's always advised to be careful to not scratch the shaft when replacing any of those seals.

So what your saying is the mechanic may have scratched one of the shafts when doing the job. Is this repairable without replacing the shaft? Is the line about a groove B.S. then.

yes, it is possible to have that happen.

I'm not sure if or how you would go about fixing that, or if the only fix is to replace it.

If the oil leak is very small is this something I can live with. It shouldn't get any worse should it.

no, any oil leak is not ok to just let go.

it could stay the same or it could get worse, one things for sure it's not going to get better. It could also soak your timing belt in oil which is bad for the belt. If that belt fails then you are in for more repairs than just that oil leak.

I also have noticed this problem. The entire timing belt cover is soaked in oil and I dont know what to do. Also I thinking I have another leak on the catch can. Any ideas?

take it back to the shop,, they should fix it free of charge ..
you paid them to fix the oil leak ,, correct ??? well,,, it is not fixed yet ,, especially if coming from 1 of the seals that they replaced

I guess its the oil pan, but its leaking and its funny because it didnt happen until after I had my oil changed. I went to have it changed and then 2 days later its leaking. And I would of done it myself but it was free...

ill take a picture in a minute and ill also take off the timing cover

I'd say since you just had the seals replaced, I'd say the mechanic probably messed something up. It is possible that the lip of the seal was folded over when installed. This would cause a new seal to leak. This should definitely be a no charge recheck. As for the balancer shaft seal, there was a recall awhile back for that seal b/c it was walking itself out over time. The recall involved installing a seal retainer over the seal. If you did not have that done, then it's a good chance that's why it started leaking in the first place. Also, if you didn't have it done, I'd recommend taking it in to the dealer to have it done. It's a freebie.

Alright well i got under the car and the seal around the oil pan is leaking really bad. Also I there is a seal around the water pump which is leaking. The entire backside of my engine as well as the timing cover is soaked with oil. Im not really sure what all this means but I am supposed to replace my timing belt in 2k miles. Is that when I should fix all of these seals or should I just go ahead and change the timing belt now?

i have a leak to in the same spot i had to do timing cuz my camshaft snaped the cam gear off and i left a bolt off my cover and need to put it on idky i havent done it check for bolts missing off timing cover
