engine mounts
i have a 91 accord lx and i needed to know how to distiguish between a bad engine mount and a good one. I know that there has to be one or more bad because my engine moves while idleing. o0o and wht is the worst that can happen from an undetected engine mount? also does anyone know the cheapest place to buy the engine mounts? please help.
Get a friend to sit in the car, hold the brake down firm, put the trans in drive, and give it a little gas, then do the same in reverse. Engine movement should give you a hint as to which mount is broken. What can happen if you leave it broken? More mounts get broken, then maybe something else, after that. You don't want to have to change them all, do you? Be light on the accelerator until you can get it fixed.
The Rear mount is usually the most problamatic of them all, and is usually responcible for taking out the front engine stabalizer. The engine's natural torque reaction is front-to-back (it's traversly mounted) and tends to rotate around an axis drawn through both the left and right motor mounts.
Surprisingly, that doesn't take the side mounts out of the line of fire; and they should also be checked.
What you're looking for is any indications of the rubber insulator material displacing or cracking. When you suffer a insulator seperation from it's case steel, it can be tough to spot. You sometimes have to remove the engines weight (jack the engine up with a 2x8x12" block of wood against the oil pan) to see if they pull apart.
If you've an Automatic, the rear mount will be the most expensive (it's dealer item only). You should find the remaining Automatic mounts and the Manual Mounts thru an aftermarket source. If hard to find, they can be ordered thru either Majestic or Saccucci Honda's online stores at Honda Jobber prices.

I see quite a few on ebay actually. Both Oem and buddy brands. I only know because I am trying to luck up one day and find some oem 5 spd mounts there.
