Default Engine Issues

My roommate has a '97 Accord Special Edition, 96K miles, no mods done that he's having some issues with.

I've never really poked my head under the hood, but it's pretty obvious to me that he beats the **** out of his car and doesn't keep up with all the suggested maintenance, but I thought I'd ask on here to see if there was something else wrong.

He was complaining yesterday that the engine seemed to anemic above 3000 RPM, and that at around 3500 RPM at 75-80 mph the tachometer was jumping over a range of about 500-700 RPM with no discernable change in actual engine speed. Also, he said that the engine was taking longer than usual to warm up to the normal operating band. Also, he said that after he shut off the engine the second electric cooling fan was running for longer than normal.

I told him he just needed to sell it, but he's convinced there's a simple fix for the problem.
Any suggestions as to what could be wrong?

the warming up problem sounds like the thermostat is getting sticky

not sure on the other issue, bad sensor maybe

Yeah, I was thinking the thermostat too- I'll see about replacing that tomorrow.
