My Girlfriend is sick up putting gas in her dodge dakota and has decided to sell it and get a 6th generation coupe. I am just curious as to what type of common problems you owners have ran into beyond the auto trans ones (that was all I could find when I searched) because I will probably be the person doing most of the work on it. Also are any years in this generation better than another?

Re: 6th Generation Problems (f22b2power)
if she gets a 4cyl 5spd there aren't many problems with the manual tranny accords. you'll just have to take care of regular wear and tear items. One I can think of that seems to be common is the rear passanger wheel bearings might need to be replaced, other than that if you keep up with regular preventitive maintaince the car should run great. I've been getting around 380-400 miles on a tank of gas. I have 136,000 miles and my 6th gen accord still runs great.

Re: 6th Generation Problems (f22b2power)
the 4cyl auto tranny will last longer than the V6 tranny. which engine does she want? I'm guessing with fuel cost she's thinking 4cyl. she might not be able to drive stick, but I can tell you that you'll get way better gas milage with a manaul tranny.

Re: 6th Generation Problems (skabone)
Watch out for ignition problems and tranny problems. If the tranny feels sketch, its gonna need a new one. Check the service records to see if the tranny or ignition was replaced.

I get around 25 city and 28-30 highway

Re: 6th Generation Problems (accordselux)
Yeah I'm actually pretty worried about the trans and was hoping that it was more of a v6 problem but the more I reasearch it looks like I'm gonna have to be real careful. Hopefully I can find one that was recently replaced.

Re: 6th Generation Problems (f22b2power)
From what I've gathered, the '98 thru '00 Accords escaped the transmission problem which reared it's ugly head in the '01 model year. Even then, Honda fessed up to their problem and issued a recall. I believe they even extended the warranty on those transmissions to 100,000 miles.
She shouldn't have any problems

Re: 6th Generation Problems (hondabum4life)
So correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like it is basically a crap shoot on the auto trans and it would be a bad idea to buy a 6th generation that doesn't have a warrenty on the trans.

Re: 6th Generation Problems (f22b2power)
id go with the 5 speed, i got a 99 accord coupe 5spd, and the only problem i had was the synchros on my 5th gear, so as long as you drive it before you buy it and the gears seem fine, then there shouldnt be any problems for a long time besides the regular wear and tear

Re: 6th Generation Problems (skabone)
1 to 2 mpg is not wayyy better gas milage. the auto trans only weighs 70lbs more than the manual and this the new 5 sp auto i doubt that you would even notice a significant difference

i get around 530 Highway miles from a full tank of gas from my 5 speed 6th gen. That is with the A\C off and very conservative shifting.

looking at around 32mpg on the highway....that is damn good.

I have a 99 Acc 4 cyl AT. Got it with 77k , now 121k. No problems, just normal service. I replaced the Timing Belt replaced at 100k. I get 26-28mpg every on every tank full.

It's a crap shoot for mostly 00-01...try to find any of the other years and it shoudlnt be a problem, or at least as much of a problem...

I've been driving fine for about 15-20k now, but who knows with these things....
