i rather have sand..than salt
by looking at northeast coast cars..they are rotting..for an example look at b18ctrb's dd's engine bay
</TD></TR></TABLE>
Therein lies the problem. The sand they lay down here has salt in it. They also stripe the roads with liquid magnesium chloride. So it's the worst part of both worlds. Yes, it has less salt, and it doesn't snow/freeze as much here ... but there was still gravel on the roads out to my house from winter of '06 as late as March of '07.
Hell, they even lay down the gravel when they think it's going to snow. So I'll wake up to a sunny, wet morning, and have to drive to work through a gravel pit.

Actually... this year it's snowed much more often than it does in DE. In DE we're more likely to get dumped on, but it doesn't happen that often. I've also seen more ice here than I'd usually see in any year in DE (obviously because of the rain here compared to the fairly dry winters in DE).
If it snows, that's when they put down the salt. They don't do it a few days before (as they do here). Here they'll put gravel down just for frost.
Then again... I usually see a car backwards in the woods in that same spot on the way to work when it frosts over.
But at least I can just wash salt away. I can't wash away chips and dents, and magnesium chloride doesn't wash away as easily as salt either (it sticks).
I'm actually confused on why this state uses magnesium chloride since every time I propose the idea of salt to people around here, they like to mention two things... that salt rusts cars on contact and they it's bad for the environment. Which either could be said for the magnesium chloride too. Some even think magnesium chloride is worse for cars than salt.
And I did research because I wanted to know what this state was doing to my car every time I drove through their "sand".

basically, people on the west coast don't know fuckall about driving in bad weather, so the cities over react and therefore fubar our cars paint... be it by salt, gravel, evil spirits, or some combination of the above.
WHICH, is why i dont drive my car in the winter!

Here, here.
I can't believe that people in Washington still drive like complete and utter fucktards in the rain. They'll either go 45 or 80 in the pouring rain, and it's just like, "Look, learn to drive, *******. You've lived in this state you're entire life. It rains every goddamn day. How have you not figured this out?"
