So, I was just hit with a decent little bombshell that I was hoping to avoid for another 6 months or so.

Took the Accord (99 EX sedan) in for an oil change and tire rotation. Knowing that it needs two tires and maybe a battery. However, they strongly recommend that I do the timing belt, water bump and head gaskets. The bad part is, since the Accord is about to turn 100k, I'm kinda worried that they're right. The service guy wasn't trying to be a sales man, he seemed really worried. So I asked for a quote to get everything done (tires and all) and it came out to a little over $1500

Should I do the maintenance or buy a TSX or am I just being a sucker and it'll last another 6 months or so

how much do they want for the parts. 1500 is steep. you dont know any mechanic that will do that stuff for you, cheaper?

1500 is outrageous Jon, if you need it done, let me know I know someone that can do it for a lot cheaper than that! Is that the one that came V6 though?

Naw it's not a 6. The 1500 was for a timing belt, water pump, all of the gaskets, full fluid flush, battery, tires and an alignment. That price is coming from Honda, which I know is a rip but I like building the paper trail incase I go to sell it down the road. I may all be in my mind, but pretty sure I can smell rubber burning whenever I press on the gas

$1500 is not bad at all from Honda for a T-belt/2 tires. Usually i rec. the cam seal/balancer shaft seal with the t-belt. Might as well.

I coulda done the bitch for free if you were in VA...

Timing belts are recommended at 105k or 7 yrs. You're over the years already and almost at the mileage. You really don't wanna push it with the timing belt. I almost made a grown man cry yesterday when I told him his car needed an engine.

He had a clean as hell prelude that wouldn't start. Broke a belt, bent the valves in all 4 cyls. 96% leakdown... It's cheaper to put a used engine in it than re-do the head. Even if you redo the head, the tired bottom end combined with a fresh head might wear the rings very quickly.

I am a little concerned that you are taking your car in for oil changes though...

I picked up a 90 EX about a month ago, and it had been rattle can painted by a previous owner. It looked good from 30 feet away, but up close, it was pretty bad. The entire car had horrible orange peel, and there were runs and large drips in several places. So I have sanded down the majority of the car in preparation for getting it painted. The car was originally black, but I'm not a huge fan of black, and the car still has some blemishes that would show up a lot on a black car. I will be doing something lighter, but I want to keep it neutral.

I have narrowed my choices to white, silver, or gray. I already have an 89 Si that is white, so I'm kinda shying away from that, but silver or gray will hide the blemishes a bit, while still looking nice. I like the factory gray color of our cars (like ME-B-N-ME ), so that's a top choice, and I've always liked silver.

What do you all think?
