Default Your VAFC Hack experiences..........

Who ever is doing the hack please post your experience with it and what you think of it. Please post your setup and type of motor.

For my friend so far not so good. We originally were using 390cc dsm from an auto 1g eclipse turbo (did not realize that auto and stick had diff cc injectors) and blew the rings on the #4 piston. All we did was change the block to another b16 block. We have since recentally upgraded to the required 450cc injectors and the settings are -38% across the board wide and narrow throttle as wellas lvt and hvt. Also @ 40psi fuel pressure.

Blew a 30 degree section of #1 ring land in short order. I was running 4-5 psi, which has the ECU reading off the most advanced part of the ignition maps @ approx 34-38 degrees total advance... a NA LS hits about 10 degrees lower at WOT. I think running more boost, which results in less total timing, is safer in these setups... definitely retard your distributor ~3 degrees of so and you only pass through the extreme danger zone briefly.

I now use a chip with ignition maps replotted for the AFC hack, and the car runs great. It makes the ECU behave like a factory forced induction vehicle, as long as you have the AFC to fiddle the MAP sensor signal. One of my friends is running a turbo ZC with a $15 voltage regulator in place of an AFC and the same chip and it runs very well, too.

As far as your friend goes... get an EGT or access to a wideband in short order and tune that fuel - I'm sure it could use with richening in the upper revs as -38% would be a tad lean IMO.

Stock ECU, Stock b18b, 440cc rc injectors, S-AFC

Settings around -37% average hi and lo

Distributer retarded ~3 degrees, never detonated (audibly)

A/F ratio after tuning is 12.5 or less (cept first gear its about 12.5-12.9 as I saw at the track)

I love everything about it, cept the constant code 13 for baro sensor (its not broken, just a by-product of obd2 + afc hack). People with greddy blue boxes have this problem also when they are obd2 generally speaking.

Deifnalty like this setup 100x more then old stock injectore + inline + 12:1 fmu setup......

Just installed mine sunday.
B16a2 stock engine
67,000 miles JRSC 9PSI
Vafc -40% at idle
-34% all the way up untuned
Stock fuel pressure
RC 440's
Runs so so so much better than that Dam SMC
Hopefully to be tuned in the next week or two
I love it so far and the J&S says no detionation what so ever

I'm running the VAFC hack with about 6 psi on a greddy SOHC kit (D16Z6) with DSM 450's. I'm retarding about 3 degrees, maybe a little more, my timing gun doesn't give me a readout like the fancy ones.

Anyway, I started with -40% across the board and the car idled like **** and detonated like **** on the top end. So, to fix the idle, I richened it to -30% below 1000rpm's and it idles much better now. The detonation up top is another story. I'm retarded about 3 degrees like I said before, and I went ahead and richened it up a ton up top (-38 starting right before the VTEC crossover and continuing to -34 at 8000 rpm), and I'm still detonating once I hit about 4500 under load. It's pissing me off. Maybe I need to take more timing out, or just suck it up and buy a 6btm.

My other beef is the bucking at part throttle... gets annoying trying to drive in a parking lot. Also, the hard starts kind of suck too.

Maybe all this will be fixed with tuning I don't know.

J.Davis: where did you get your chip that remaps the timing for the AFC hack? Are you fairly happy with it?

i actually just had it tuned 2 weeks ago

cause they are no where near -35 they are mostly at -18 or so
here is my dyno sheet from tuning
my setup is the following
2000 Civic Si

revhard stage 2 kit @9-10 PSI
AFC hack
DSM injectors
AEM FPR
walbro high flow fuel pump

im guessing this is normal with the vafc hack? its called "part throttle bucking" is there anyway to get rid of it

edit: would safe mode make it do this.....aaaaaaaaaaaahhh **headacke**888

J.Davis: where did you get your chip that remaps the timing for the AFC hack? Are you fairly happy with it?
I made the chip myself. I love it; I have limited standalone functionality out of the setup at the cost of a $75 chip burner, chips/sockets, and some freeware tuner apps courtesy of PGMFI.

I had to do my first chips by editing the maps in a hex editor, by hand. That was pretty ******* unpleasant, I think I spent 4-5 hours on the ignition map alone. With the advent of Ghettodyne, etc, I spend the majority of my time implementing changes in tune by swapping the chip from ECU to burner, just like the Hondata guys had to until recently.

I've got a GM 2 bar Speed PHreak kicked me, and the tune for it, ready to roll. Just waiting on a few last minute parts to reassemble the vehicle and I can report back.

Do you have your idle bogged down with a lot of fuel? Every time I had mine set to -25% at 1000 rpm I got a sluggish/bogged takeoff on tip in.
