Default why does stainless rust anyways?

I just got my Full-Race AC Manifold ceramic coated about 1000 miles ago to get rid of the ugly *** rust that happens to the mild steel flanges...but why is the collector area starting to rust. Even though it was coated, I did not expect the Stainless to start rusting. Is stainless still prone to rusting, cause it won't simply wipe off which I thought it might. Just curious. Kinda bugs me when I paid a good amount of money to prevent it from rusting, but even without the coating why is the stainless rusting to begin with.

The Full-Race AC manifold is awesome btw.

Not all stainless is rust proof. Sometimes it's just more resistant to rust. My stainless Inlinepro manifold and motor mounts have some rust, but it's not the type of rust that builds up and flakes off.

Because all steel has some content of Iron. Stainless just has a very small amount.

Iron is what causes rust.

Although this is probubly the reason...

Because it is probably 308 filler.

Ahh okay, I was just curious. I was looking at my stainless steel exhaust the other day and I didn't see any rust on it, so that is why I was under the impression that it was rust proof. I will just have them recoat the manifold when I have a chance to take it off. They will recoat it under warranty.

it's fine though; i really get a kick out of watching peoples reactions when i insult their rice gods... i really dont like full-race for a number of legitimate reasons but not so much to the point that i carry on on this forum.. i do most of it to step on some toes and **** people off</TD></TR></TABLE>

What pistons? Unless you bought some 78mm custom JEs for a ZC, then I have never sold you pistons.

And how was the intercooler fucked up? Its funny how this has never been mentioned to me until now. I would gladly help out anyone that contacts me immediately if there is an issue.

Fact is, I just don't like people bashing others for no reason at all, other than to simply bash them. It just makes you look like a dumbass, and brings down the credibility of this entire site.

oh and this site has no need to worry about credibility; As it sits the new threads and the new honda-tech is 99.5% comercialism and bullshit; the only true asset this site has is the PETABYTES of information in the archived content; without it I would have never stopped hating hondas... New threads are full of pepole trying to pedal their wares or other nonsensical jdm name brand play to play ricer bullshit that its pretty sad... Every now and then you'll find something worthwile or stumble onto the fabrication forum; other than that its all "hay guys look at my shop built gsr with a full race terbow! i'm now member number 2349089234903452938468 and only out $50k!"</TD></TR></TABLE>

i won't lie, i can't afford anything other than DIY... but... If i could i would probabaly still DIY... with that said... i find it hard to not get a good chuckle out of this.

IIRC, the other stainless alloys have less chromium or nickle in them, which makes them a big less resistant to rust, as well as slightly magnetic. They were also a bit less brittle too.

If you don't like 'comercialism', get the hell out and only read HMT.

ROFL! That's an understatement! His engine bay is so clean you can eat off the valve cover! I've been following his build for the last year or so and it's friggin insane at how clean it is.

I bet it has to do with the climate where he lives. In real wet/humid climates that coating only does soo much. HPC has info about the characteristics of the coatings on their site.

Thats my guess.

im willing ot bet that the coating was not 100% there....making that the highest point for the anoic & cathodic reaction....its like when you scrath the paint on a car...where the sratch was made it will rust faster than if the whole panel was not painted and a smooth finish...the reaction focuses on the weak point and hence corrision begins...

looks like ComputerJLT got the boot huh? all his posts on this thread is gone...

btw...you should make a "how to keep your engine bay clean thread"

Any metal will corrode if you heat it up enough. Even titanium.
