Default why does my oil look like this???

so i took my oil cap off today and saw this. it is caked all underneath the valve cover. it is not on the dipstick, and none came out when i drained my oil. it smells like gas and is stuck to the underside of the valve cover.

usually when you have a white milky substance like that on the oil cap = blown headgasket

Looks like a ton of blowby. What kind of set-up do you have for crankcase ventilation?

i dont think so, its not like when coolant gets into your oil. i have seen blown headgaskets, but im not so sure this is it.

i have two -10 vents on the front of the valve cover. i have the -10 on the back too, but i currently have them capped off. i guess i could add my other can i have laying around. excessive blowby makes more sense than coolant..

How much power are you making? Whats your set-up? It does look like blowby, especially since it smells like gas.

So you are running 3 ports on the valve cover? Is your catch can routed back to the block, or is it over flowing?

it has a valve on the bottom for draining, i just leave it open. i have two ports off the front of the valve cover hooked up. i have 2 ports off the back of the block, not currently hooked up (they are plugged at the moment until i mount my other can)

I would suggest hooking up the other catch can to see if this helps solve the issue.

It's possible that there is some coolant getting into the oil, this looks like blowby, but it wouldn't hurt to do a leakdown test and to monitor your coolant level more closely.

Do you have a pcv valve? Without that, the blowby is going to contaminate everything much more, since it is not being diluted with fresh air. Just letting the blowby push itself out isn't anywhere near as good. As far as the head gasket, why not do a hydrocarbon test on your coolant first..

cuz i can swap a headgasket in about 2 hours. its not that big of a deal. just go ahead and do it just in case. i dont have my pcv valve, so i guess that could be why.

So can I, but the hydrocarbon test takes about 2 minutes. I wouldn't want to end up wasting those 2 hours, + the cost of the gasket..

Probably. I had a shop down the street do it for me for 10 bucks. You can get the kit for 20-30 bucks, and it lasts for multiple tests. It's just a setup that goes in place of your radiator cap with a fluid that changes color when exposed to hydrocarbons, basically.

I'd bet your headgasket is okay though. I guess we'll see..

Its coolant in the oil. 99% chance its the head gasket. But it could be a cracked head or block too.

im pretty sure u could also do a pressure test on the coolant system to verify headgasket, sunk sleeve, or cracked head etc

i havent noticed really any performance loss, so i dont think it would necessarily be anything major such as sunk or cracked sleeve.

I agree. I had a leaky headgasket with the tiniest bit of coolant leakage, no milky oil in the oilpan, no performance lost. I always thought that 400+ HP headgasket blowing was catastrophic, not so.
