Default When is a boost controller required?

I have an S300 and I saw that a boost controller can be added for very little. It works by gear and looks pretty sophisticated but I don't think my application requires it. From what I have read, it is only needed in higher HP applications.

Could it be beneficial in any way?

Depends on your setup. Are you trying to make more hp then what your wastegate spring has? what is your setup?

You are going to need it.

Try the car out with just the wastegate and see how 1st and second hook up. If you are roasting them you will need to drop to a lower wastegate spring.

A solenoid on your s300 will give you good boost control. Odds are the factory spring is going to be too large for your car. You probably won't be able to make full power till 4th gear. And that is with street slicks.

Is it possible to only press the pedal only half way down? I'm always amazed how so many people on H-T have gas pedals that are all or nothing like an on/off switch.

Reading someone else's opinion over the internet, and complete understanding of how a boost controller integrates into a turbo setup are two different things.

There is no set HP level at which you need to start using a boost controller. You use one when you want to increase the boost past the PSI of your wastegate. You can do this in multiple stages with a more complex controller such as the one you can get with the S300.

In my situation, on my current build I have a stock D16Y8 with a small OEM T3, externally gated. I have a 4.35 psi spring, which will be my daily pressure. I'll be using an EBC to turn that up to a max of 10-12, which will put me in the 200whp ballpark. So in this case I can run ~4psi under normal circumstances, but still have my max power available at the push of a button.

Another situation could come from someone who wants to use their car primarily on the drag strip, and needs as much power as his tires can hold in a given gear, or at a given speed. This is where the more complex boost controllers come in like the ones found in some aftermarket ECUs. Different units offer different options, but boost by RPM, boost by MPH, and boost by gear are some of the options.

I hope this helps.

no offense, but if you have turboed your honda, i assume you pretty know the basics right?
wastegate, blowoff, boost, and how the system builds pressure?

boost controller, any kind - mbc, ebc, is simply increasing your boost level. the one for s300 uses a solenoid and it is a kind of EBC.

if your WG spring (assuming you have ext wg) or your actuator, is set at 3psi. and you want to boost 5 psi. do you need a controller? yes if you do not want to change the wg spring.

I have removed the offending posts.

I need to ask, why does a simple question have to turn into a pissing contest? If you as a user feel as though a question is too simple, or a user needs to educate themselves, how about a simple polite PM instead of berating each other on here? As far as responding to these type of posts, the best response I can give is, Don't feed the trolls. There are some very intelligent users on this site, but some of them get tired of answering what they feel are simple questions. I just wish people didn't forget that, at one point they too were noobs.
