What set up for Freeway RUNS?
Hey guys-
Just a quick question here...
The car : 89 CRX Si
The motor : 91 LS B18A
The goal : Freeway pulls
Car has LS motor. 185 compression across all cylinders.. The previous owner of the tranny claims it is a GSR tranny but the stamp is removed.. My bet would be a factory LS tranny..
So - my question is.. What would you guys use for freeway runs? I am starting to like to run freeway runs now more than drag.. More excitement and straight 0-115mph runs bore me..
What size turbo would you advise? A straight T4? Or is that just too damn big.. I am thinking of going with either a t3/t4e or possibly a 60-1... I know the spool time will be slow but I'm looking for mostly top end power and lag is not of much concern.. Traction issues suck with CRX+LS+t3 so I'm not worried.. What tranny would you recommend.. Is the gearing in the LS tall enough? I know the S1 in my Integ is too damn short..
This will be on a built block stock sleeve LS.. Sleeves coming later down the road.. Fuel managment taken care of.. No high horsepower goals etc-- just want freeway pull for 40-140 type races... Fun question here -- nothing too serious..

Highway pulls = 60-1 trust me I have put away many of corvettes and other V8 cars on the freeway from about 80mph up the thing just feels great!!

i wouldn't do too many top end runs on stock ls sleeves.......and i'm a big fan of stock sleeves.
best set up would be a sleeved block, ls tranny, t4, 17" te37"s or other very light wheel with like a 50 series tire or up to 60 series, huge intercooler, huge radiator, very conservative a/f ratio..........

Yeah the stock sleeves suck.. I agreee. But thats the next motor...
I am planning on 60-1 with 16" with 45 series tires.. Big front mount and GSR radiator.. Air fules will be in 11s ..

Don't worry about the sleeves but gurenteed you will break the pistons. So you better get some engine management. Any stock honda block with out engine management will blow up and 98% of the time it's gonna be a piston, from my expeirence anyway.

not in all cases, but maybe with your experiences. and ls and b20 sleeves are the weekest of the b series blocks.

yes, but engine management with the right fuel pump, injectors, tuning, radiator, and intercooler set up will give you a decent shot at highway runs. but remember, boosting for over 20 seconds can be a very bad thing. just make sure you "make your list and check it twice....."

I usually give a 10-15 sec just to be on the safe side. That's what advise I give for any FI vehicle, mainly if you get on it for 15sec. give it a 5 min cool down time.
If you are willing to blow your motor or kill yourself, have fun

Long story short.
I wouldnt build a highway car, If you are make sure you build one hell of a cage and always wear saftey equipment including a helmet. I might sound like a nagging mother, but I come from experience. 120mph into the wall. Its not fun. And the bills are stupid crazy.-pdang

Yeah, stock sleeves suck. I cracked my stock LS sleeves while rolling at about 120-130 mph. It was...............fun.

Re: What set up for Freeway RUNS? (Drag_On)
Well the first mistake you made was selecting the honda with the shortest and slimest wheel base. The widest/longest most areodynamic B-series honda would be my choice. also an additional few hundred pounds wouldn't hurt that bad when going 130+ and u happen to get hit by a large gust of wind.
Just like on a drag car the suspension of a highway car is very important. You don't want it be stiff like on a drag car where the car can't handle abrupt street situations but you also don't something too soft like stock cause then the car will get floaty and out of control. Same with tires, its probably not smart to run a drag radial like a G-force TA with a soft sidewall. I can tell you from experience it gets very mushy trying to corner those tires above 100.
As for power. thats the easy part. you pretty much want as much of it as you can get. quick spool and low end power is not too important cause with a highway run there is really no finish line. it does not matter who gets out in front if eventually one car is going to pull the other. With that understood I would choose the largest of the turbo choices.
On tuning. Definitly tune it rich(11:1) to keep cylinder temps down as low as possible on those 5th gear pulls. An EGT guage would be another super smart investment to know when to let off if ur motor is in danger.
lastly, gearing......Gearing a highway car is a lil different then gearing a 1/4 mile car. Short gears will still have the advantage of accelerating faster. But they have a downside too. they give you a false sense of security when you hang dead even with a car up through 4th gear and the seconed you go to 5th you get pulled. Short gears are a good thing if they can get you far enough out in front to where the other car wont catch you, but never plan on fetching another car in 5th gear when its 5spd. vs. 6spd. and I garuntee 9 out of 10 of ur highway races(if u r fast) will be against cars with longer gears or 6spds.
Sorry if i sound like a big run on sentence I am at work trying to post without getting caught ahha.

Re: What set up for Freeway RUNS? (DIRep)
I personally think this whole topic is stupid. I just realized he's from Fargo, ND. My Father and Stepmother live their, I hope they never come anywhere near this guy when he's doing his "freeway pulls". Keep that **** on the track, not the freeways where people drive.
Sorry for the rant, I just think this is stupid.

Freeway runs
Empty Freeway runs
Freeway runs against a cocky driver
Cant tell me no one on this board hasnt got a temptation to race someone on a clear freeway, especially if they try to start something. Plus its not like your endangering any residential areas either. Of course its not good, but ****, im no fairy godmother
I would definatly get a roll cage and safety equipment if its within your budget. EGT guage is also a definate.

well first off like they said you picked the wrong car and company anything witha 4 will not pull that great. I hit 130 everyday going to work i just feel at home going that fast so my next car will be a supra as that is what you should look into.

Recently some people I knew were seriously injured in a freeway crash. 1 died, and another passenger lost her baby (she was 4 months pregnant). About 4 weeks ago my daughter was born. It served to further alter my perspective.
That said, I hope you stupid F*CKS who go freeway racing crash in an extra special way so you don't die, but your mama has to wipe the drool off your busted *** chin for the rest of your miserable life. Have a nice day.

With a 205/45/16 tire and a stock LS tranny "only" spinning to 8000 RPM's would give you the gearing to do 175, which is more than enough. If you have a GSR tranny, same tire and redline, that's enough for 160 MPH, and with a B16/ITR tranny you have enough gear for about 150 MPH.

Sure, but will he have enough HP to push all that air out of the way in order to hit those speeds?

I may sound like a hypocrite but i do believe in this. The freeways are clear around 12-1am and on. especially after 3am. Sometimes that's when i push it and open the engine up a little....just a little though. . Somepoeple race swerving through traffic and I think that's stupid...and yes I've done it before but I try not to do it now. To many morgues around and I don't want my family to visit me there.

I have a similar setup, b18a in a crx but im upgrading the turbo and i want one that will pull crazy hard top end (somthing bigger than t3/t04). I was wondering what turbo you guys would recomend. I was looking at mostly t3/t04 with larger trim or t3/60-1 with smaller or should i straight t4, what makes the most power. This car is for mostly drag racing and freeway runs and lag is not a problem.
