What is this and do I need it.
I am currently rewiring a bunch of things in my engine bay and also cleaning things and taking out stuff I do not need. I found this canister and it has three hoses on the top. Two of them are capped off and the other one is going to my intake manifold. Then there is a big hose on the bottom of it. I have not jacked up my car yet so not sure where that goes. My question is do I need it and if so what does it do? Thanks
That is a filter for venting the gas tank pressure. The big hose at the bottom vents to the ground. You can follow it if you look under the car..It doesn't go very far. It filters the vapors your tank releases. Some people take it off..some don't. There is a back up at the fuel cap. You don't need it persay but it is there for emission purposes.
well you can remove the canister, you just can't plug the vent line from teh tank. What the can does (charcoal can) is hold on the gasoline vapors until you start your car.... then when you start it, it runs em through teh motor to try to burn em... emmissions crap, as was stated!
okay so the two hoses that are connected is big one and the one to the intake manifold. Your saying the big one just goes down and dumps into the air. But what is the one that goes to the intake manfold for because the other two are caped off.
The reason I want to remove it is simple. If it is not doing anything why have it in there cluttering up my engine bay. I am trying to make it look nice and neat and clean.

ummm unless it's broken it should be doing something. The line/hose going to your IM is probably taking the vapors and trying to burn them as that dude said earlier. I love a clean engine bay as much as the next guy and have also contemplated taking mine off, but havent yet cause its not harming anything or broken. If you take it off let us know how much room it clears and also if you can smell the vapors in the car.
Okay thanks for all the input guys. I broke out my helms and saw the diagram of where everything is supposed to run. The one line that is conencted to the metal line that comes from the tank is still connected. I thought there was a line going to my IM but after looking around with a mirror I saw there was none. There was two other lines on the top of the tank that had hoses on but were caped off. I pulled those hoses and put plugs on the nibbles to make it look cleaner. I decided to keep it on afterwards because the though of gas fumes in my engine bay does not exite me to much. I would rather be safe then sorry. Thanks again for the help
Your engine bay isn't your room. You dont need to clean it and throw crap out
I'd leave it in. It's not hurtin too much. I've found, it actually does a good job of protecting the cv boots when removing the service bolt on fuel filter
