what can cause an oil pump to fail?
ok my oil pump failed yesterday. what can cause this to happen at 40,000 miles? ive never heard of one of these going so fast
oh and if u didnt know i have a built 2000 turbo gsr

when your oil pump failed what else did it take out? i've never heard of an oil pump failing on a Honda that wasn't making over 400 whp. The stock oil pump is made from this cheap sintered iron and basically when its over stressed (fast revs) the oil pump shatters into pieces. if you're running some type of aftermarket crank pulley i would suspect that to be a major contributing factor.
heheh of course. that's what i meant. trust me, i've been a fan of Prodrive and a friend of John Wheelis long enough not to get those two (oil pump / oil pump gear) confused. i'm just too lazy at this time of night to type it all out.
seen a few honda oil pumps leak from the oil seal, sometimes pretty bad, like pouring out, this just seems too happen, but if u have excessive blowby, this can cause seal to blow out too
ok well im not positive yet (no dyno time) on what kinda horsepower its gunna be making but im guessing 350ish and i have the stock crank pully and i had a lot of blow by so im assuming thats what knocked it out.
oh yeah also a bearing was spun with like 30 miles on the new motor. time to fix....again

well, its typically most common at hp levels exceeding 350whp. If you plan on making over 300hp, I'd really recommend upgrading it. An oil pressure gauge to go along with it is a FANTASTIC idea.
Things that can cause an oil pump failure - very high output, high rpms, age, detonation, crankwalk/vibration, aftermarket crank pullies, and last but not least, detonation (yes I know I said it twice)

yah im starting to think that an oil pressure gauge is a good move. do u think that this could have been caused by blow by at all?
could have. Blow by could introduce detonation. Burning oil along with your a/f mixture lowers the effective octane rating of the gas used. So, yes.
