weird noise from clutch?
i know many bo0stheads use this clutch, so i was wondering if you guys could help me out, i just got a ACT Xtreme clutch with street disk installed and it grabs very hard and feels fine, but there is a very strange noise after the clutch install, it sounds sorta like a high pitched cricket or something like that... the clutch feels and drives fine, but the noise is driving me crazy...
if i press the pedal enough to where there is no more freeplay, then the noise stops, but if i just leave it alone it makes that weirdass highpitch whirring noise like a cricket...i cant figure it out, but i think it might be something with the freeplay, can someone please help?, thanks in advance
edit- btw its for a 2000 civic si..

clutch chatter...mine does the same thing...some people say its normal, others say that somthings wrong but won't say what...Its annoying but I've gotten use to it
i was thinking maybe if the pushrod was adjusted it wouldnt make that noise anymore?, but then the engagement would be different and i like how it is now
I'm so glad that you made this post, because I have the EXACT same problem with the ACT XTSS! After breaking in the clutch for 500 miles, I started to be less careful when I was starting off. For instance, when I'm on a hill and I need to slide the clutch more, it sounds like a "weirdass highpitch whirring noise" as you said. It doesn't do it all the time, but when I want to get off the line more quickly without just dumping the clutch I get this noise. The clutch grabs hard and doesn't slip at all, but this is extremely annoying!
Another thing I've noticed is that there is a rubber on rubber sound from the pedal area after this clutch was installed. This happens after driving for a while. The clutch also engages higher than I thought it would for a brand new clutch. I've read other posts where people complained that it engaged too close to the floor, so I guess it needs to be adjusted the opposite direction and lubed. There's nothing wrong with the throwout bearing, I'm pretty sure of that.
I have a Civic Si like you do, but it's a '99.

ACT says 200-300 miles of normal city driving (highway doesn't count), so don't beat on it!! The reason I say this is because you mentioned you have only 40 miles on it and mentioned how well it grabbed. Baby it for a while. I took mine to 500 just to be safe.
MiraiZ, I'm pretty sure it's not clutch chatter. I had this with my Exedy when it was cold, and this is completely different.
turbod16y8, what problems did you have before you made that adjustment?

like i said before...adjust your pedal rods and youre engage would be higher.</TD></TR></TABLE>
Ok, so you're just referring to the engagement point, and not the noise problem then?

You've got a little play/slop in the bearing. When you push the clutch it puts pressure on the bearing, takes up the slack and the noise goes away, sounds like a bird chirpin right?

that's what im saying.. my problem is exactly like that, when i engage the clutch then the sound goes away, when my foot is off the clutch and its on idle then it's making that damn noise.. anyhow.. what the heck is causing this?, 4banging.. it doesnt annoy the hell out of you?.. i want to break my car everytime i hear it

hell yea...it's embarassing. from info I've gathered about this, the culprit COULD be the input-drive shaft bearing not 100% sure though. The thing is that mine only happens at idle and the A/c must be on, engage clutch and the sound is gone. Turn off A/c at idle the sound goes away. it's making me fwacking
the only option is prolly to drop the tranny and inspect.
FYI...I'm using the ACT Al4-XTSS with AASCO flywheel

i just read on http://www.advanctedclutch.com, that if there is play in the bearing that it should gradually self center during regular usage.. so i guess the noise will go away? !
I think what you're experiencing is different than the problem I have. The noise I hear ONLY happens when I slide the clutch from a standing start and I'm not overly gentle with it. I'm not saying that this happens because I beat on it, but if I give it more gas to start off I get this whirring noise as the pressure plate is being engaged, then it goes away. If it was the throwout bearing I would be able to hear it when at a standstill, either with the clutch engaged or disengaged and this is not the case. My car is silent at idle with the clutch in or out.
