Default Wastegate placement

Hi guys, i have just finished an equal length mani, its a top mount application for a vw 16v engine, wanted some opinions before i T into the collector.

Where would the best place be to install teh wastegate, Im trying to keep the tubing from collector to wg to 80mm. Its a tial gate, I was wondering if placing it in a hot area like next to dp and turbine would be a bad idea, an it get affected by hot temps?

where all the tubing meets at the collector would probably be the best place for a wastegate, since thats where its placed on many other manifold setups. you can probably rig it so that the dump tube merges into the downpipe.

Yes i know where to T in but i was curious what was a length size i could safley use not to cause too much delay and spiking of boost. I was told 80mm from collector to wg was the max i could go safley. Are the tial units affected by heat at all? LIke if its placed in a hot area ie close to dp?

thanks

you can go much further than 80mm if you want. I have worked on setups with a good 8" before the WG and they controled boost very well. Only tricky part may be supporting the WG without letting it bind up when the pipe expands...heim joint hanger maybe.

Hm that is interesting! Infact I remember seeing some F1 pics of the turbo era, the length of pipe from runner to wg was long, also by the way they routed the piping it made the air go into the wg first then move down the turbine. Will see if i can find a pic.

yup, there is a lot to be said fo WG biased designs but if you are not running a very free flowing turbine its not going to affect boost control much if at all. Top end flow might be a different story but I haven't tested it myself...so chime in if you have
