No offense to ANYONE that does a DIY setup. The majority of you at least have decent knowledge of turbos and a will to be able to put it together quite well and safely.
But we had a chance to dyno (with Hondata, mind you) this piece of work (boy, I use this term loosely) and we have recorded this to be the fastest dyno session ever. It took us twice as long to set this up on the dyno than it did to even let it make one run.
We made sure that this guy signed a waiver of ALL liability, and we even told him the suggestions of what he could do to clean up his "setup".
One red flag of this car occured when the wiring of the car started smoking somewhere near or around the ECU and the climate control area. it was immediately shut down, and luckily it didn't happen again.. we think.
After we made sure we had our TETNUS shots updated,
We went on one run, up to only 5500rpms on a b16. saw soo much white smoke, then we just called it a day. Apparently he went to 2 other dynos for tuning, and they turned this guy down flat because of the HORRIBLE install and running of this car, and didn't want it to be in the facility in which it would possible see its last day.
Now, we at least knew the previous owners of the motor itself, and we shed a memorable tear when we had seen what had become of the previous owner's hard work. It has stock sleeves, 9 to 1 CR pistons and Crower Rods.
Yes, That is Duct Tape on the ENTIRE rear bumper of this Earl Shine paint job

I LOVE the interior, especially the 4 F&F switches of boost, tach, EGT, and the wiring of the Timer above the vent

Baller Paint Job

This Monza Fake BOV took 3 ring seals to get it to stay in the flange. It used to spin inside the flange of the piping.

This is what we saw even before the first run. We noted it on his bill

Ah, the Mo Jus.... The always wonderful SS Autochrome manifold (the 2nd one.. The first one which cracked right at the flange, and almost dropped the turbo in the bay) The Turbo itself was an E-bay special in which the new owner flooded the turbo w/ too much oil and slightly blew the seals in the compressor. The Vacuum lines half collapsed, not t'd off correctly, and the engine bay really had oil towards the bottom of the block..

This guy actually thought that as it was he'd make over 260whp with this setup on this b16. When we told him that he needed a new headgasket, he thought it was a 20 dollar part. (Knowing that even the stock ones from the dealer are about $70). He freaked when he thought that $70 was expensive. He is definately in over his head.
Just had to vent with that....

i dont think you should be knocking his car.its a better start than what i have seen in alot of cars.yeah..he needs a headgasket, but with hondata, and a t3/t4 along with that b16,he should be close to his goals.im sure the car is not finished and alot of what you are seeing is temporary, and if its not and its his style, then leave it at that.if he is one of your customers than i dont think its very bright to bash on his car.
we all know there are a ton of riced up monkey cars out there that alot of you or me would not drive,i see them daily.

Not a personal customer... this was NOT a temporary setup, and was done over a year and a half of "planning"
This is not a personal bash for this individual. No name, or location is mentioned here. What this is like a parent teaching a child a lesson by embarrassment. We have tried to work with him to go through the many sponsored shops and technicians in honda-tech, because we understand that there are others out there who DO do their own setups correctly, be it DIY or otherwise. This is a BAD example that is all that is intended for those looking to do it themselves, and to remind them that looking over every aspect of their project is key

I peeled a little to see underneath, and the car's bumper is still red, with some yellow in it.. Don't know what his purpose was..

I don't see anything wrong with the parts, just mis-installed. SSAC manifolds are functional and work, if you brace turbo and wastegate, which everyone is told to do and no one ever does and when the mani breaks it is because SSAC mani is junk. Pfft.
Blown headgasket, huh? Let me guess, he was wailing on it for a while on a generic basemap?
I drove a turbo CRX for two years that "looked" far and away worse than that setup, I spent a lot less, and it ran well. Internet forum "searching" or "planning" is all well and good, I don't do anything without a good netsearch first, but a couple years turning wrenches and a good lick of common sense is what is required to pull any setup out of the hat.
There's an all-bling Integra at the shop right now with $12K under the hood, everyone here would approve of the parts and the planning that went into this vehicle, but the fact of the matter is the guy had never done anything more than minor motorcycle repair previously. He yanks a stock LS and eight months later tries to go back with a jigsaw puzzle of sleeved 2.0 LS/VTEC and aftermarket parts that don't fit like stock. Guy has a LOT of heart, and isn't a dummy, but it was too much too soon for his abilities. If it wasn't being gone through to make sure everything's correct... well, I bet it'd be an interesting race with the car in question in this thread.

that manifold would be the most popular if it didnt crack ,anyway....
that car looks thrown together just like the turbo kit , im suprised the idiot has hondata , youd think hed come in there with an afc or somthin not like thats a bad thing , but it seems funny to buy all cheapo parts , then hondata. i hope he sees this thread and kills himself for what he has done to that car

haha this is bad. but ive seen worse. well actually i watched a kid build a kit that was worse. just because he got board one day.
atleast he had a manifold that bolted to the turbo instead of just welding the 2 together.

there is some Jerry riggin.
more pics hear.

ya i dont think the car is that horrible. its more of a lack of knowledge which also appears as a lack of common sense. speaking of which, whats with the duct tape? dont tell me it was masked that way to paint the rest of the car.
if you want to see a lot worse visually, try http://www.homemadeturbo.com
the only differences are they may actually run - reliably even, and the hack jobs are functional.
