Default VTEC engagement

I saw some of the posts for VTEC engagement and found that some tuners are lowering the VTEC engagement point while others are raising theirs. Is there a philosophy behind what it should be set to? I read that the earlier engagement helps spool the turbo faster, but then again, there's a reason why it was set higher from the factory right (lift/duration...). I can't afford too much dyno time and I'm not sure how much time I want to spend tuning my VTEC as aopposed to fuel/timing. Any thoughts?
