which viscosity of motor oil?
i jus did the search function and couldn't find anything on which viscosity of motor oil to run on a 00' Civic Si w/a Drag Gen 3 turbo kit w/a T04B turbine running at 7psi max. Could someone shed some light on this? I'm not sure which viscosity to run w/this setup. I'm gonna install my turbo kit this friday and trying to pick up some of the last things to get my car running. Also what brand of motor oil do most of you use? I kno i gotta use synthetic, jus don't kno which viscosity nor a good brand. Thanx for your help!!!
I believe that 20w50 is recommended when using turbo. It also depends on where you live.
If you live in an area where temperatures can reach below 0 and above 100 you should use 10w30 for winter and 15w50 in the summer.

can anyone else offer a reply? btw.. i live in sunny So Cal. so any So Cal peeps got some useful information for me?? thanx
I would use NON-synthetic Valvoline VR-1 Racing Oil 20-50w. I either use that or jsut regular NAPA oil
. Usually i run 15-40w in the winter and 20-50w spring, summer, fall.

I'm in SoCal.
you guys use some thick oil. Since my car is a daily driver I use 5w-30.
Cold starts is where most of the wear happens, so you want some oil that will go through that pump with ease to lubricate quickly. After the car warms up you are at a viscosity of 30. Unless you redline it for long periods of time 50 weight will do nothing but hurt ya. Use the thinnest oil possible unless you have alot of freeplay in your parts or you burn alot of oil, step up accordingly. 30 weight is none less lubricating than 50 weight unless you are absolutly beating the crap out of the car 24/7 to cause viscosity breakdown. 15w-50 will take a while to get to all your parts and cause wear. And then when the oil gets up to temp the 50 weight will cause extra stress on your parts. Somebody correct me if I am wrong.

The thicker oil you run may slow you down, but it coats your moving parts better, and makes your motor last longer overall. 5-30 is crazy thin.

wow! a lot of different replies in terms of which viscosity motor oil to run. i'm still sorta stuck on which one to choose. I was thinking of running 10w30, in a synthetic form. I'm so lost though. anyone else want to throw me some input. Like some mentioned above, it matters how the temperatures are in my state. lets hear some more replies from some so cal turbo people!!!!
I am using 10w30 Mobile 1 syn. and i have no problems.
To me a 50w is just to thick in the mornings, and it takes awhile to get to the top end of the motor.

30 weight is non less lubricating than 50 weight. and as far as being coated, it really doesnt matter since all parts are getting a constant presurised stream of oil.

Id say 10w-40 or 20w-50. I use 10w-40 its a good compromise between honda recommeded 5w-30 and 20w-50 race oil. Dont go synthetic either. I have heard bad things about synthetic oil and turbos. Plus the other stuff only costs you around 2.00 a quart!

That's a topic that's up for debate. I've used Mobil One synthetic on my turbo from day 1- it's been 2 1/2 years and 35K miles- absolutely no problems. To me, the synthetics hold up better to heat- which turbo's generate alot of. I use 10W30 all year- doesn't get any colder than 50 degrees in the Winter and over 100 degrees in the summer-again no probs. GL

Agreed it is a topic up for debate. Some use it with no problems, others have problems. I just dont think its worth the extra $$$ personally..

How much is this Royal purple per quart anyway? Where can you purchase this oil?

anyway, i use 20w50 royal purple racing 51. keeps the oil pressure up and doesnt break down like conventional.
