valve guides or rings
I've been told it's both so i'mm looking to you guys for some info/pointers.
Here's the problem.
If i'm going down a hill while in gear (or just decelerating) so the vacuume is at it's highest. if i do that for a min then step on the gas i get a nice puff of smoke. i know it's burning oil because it's blue and smells like oil.
What would be the most likely cause of that? valve guides or rings?
The car doesn't smoke upon start-up in the morning, it doesn't smoke under hard acceleration unless i've been in vacuume (coasting in gear) for a few seconds (10 seconds or so). Sometimes when i leave a stop light it wil have a puff of smoke if i really get on it and was coasting in vacuume beforehand.
one friend (i trust his oppinion because he;s worked on cars for about 30 years) says it's the valves, another friend says the rings are to blame...any sugestions?
i did a leakdown test and compression test a while back and both cam out fine (leakdown was about 5%). when the car was on the dyno i didn't notice any smoke from the exhaust until the 4th run or so. and when i did see the smoke it was under deceleration (car was out of gear reving down) and it was a little stream of blue smoke for about 5 seconds, but none under acceleration. thanks again for any help.

Definetly guides. I just found out satruday that my oil problem is the guides, I have the same burning scenario you do. Take the manifold off and look up in the ports....you'll see the problem if its on the exhaust side---which is usually the side that goes cause the intake side is cold from air and fuel.
Dont forget to order seals when/if you do the job.

Oil. Look where the valve comes out of the guide. You have to kinda be upside down to look in there, or a mirror will work to. I had 3 out of 8 bad

Thats what my mechanic and my tuner both think. by the description i gave them they both said sounds like it's the rings.
....bad news because i don't want to spend money, good news because i now have a reason to build the botom end. Thanks for the input guys.

yeah i plan to do one real soon.Sounds like it's your head gasket

I'm really hoping that it is and it's not my rings!! motor was just built 2k miles ago. it's still a newborn!! lol. I'm not burning major coolent but i notice a drop after a week of driving.

it coudl be your valve stem seals. Best way to check is to take off your exhaust manifold and check to see if you notice oil or not. If you notice oil around the ports then it's the valve stem seals something in your head. After you finish that take off your intake mani and look for oil on the intake side of the head.
If no oil is found on either the intake or exhaust side of the head then it narrows it down to the rings.

Nice method...wouldn't a Leak down test be an easier route to take if you had access to one.

since we're talking about valvestem seals and valves etc, i'm curious to know how the SS valves affect OEM valvestem seals over time. whether they're the same or worse etc.
do the SS valves wear out the valvestem seals quicker and cause them to stop sealing completely?
i rebuilt my head last Spring (GSR) with all new seals and gaskets, and i removed it a couple months ago. there is some carbon buildup on the exhaust ports but nothing really on the intake ports. i haven't taken a close look at the exhaust ports but i will now to be sure of what the buildup is, whether there is oil there from leaking valvestem seals. i'd hate to go back and rebuild the head again with all new valvestem seals.

I will look this week. I guess it's most pronounced when i'm in high vacuum for a min (going downhill in gear) then step on the gas...thats when i see the smoke.
Both my mechanic and my tuner said it sounds like it's the rings. i'm going to try everything i can before i start buying parts. I'd rather pull the head and replace the seals then pull the bottom end apart. thanks for the advice
