Default The Utility In Using a Turbo Blanket: Good or Bad?

Anyone here have recommendations for a good turbo blanket? I'm really thinking it'd be a good idea with how tight my engine bay is in my EF. I plan to wrap the turbo and the downpipe to just before the O2 and wideband bungs.

I have been pretty satisfied with my Thermal Zero brand blanket. Decently priced also.

I'm a PTP man myself. assembled and stitched better than DEI.

The more and more I look at the build differences (stitching, materials, design), it seems PTP is the way I'm leaning. I used the "lava" material/style wrap on my motorcycle headers and loved the way it looked. I'll likely get the PTP lava and post up some pictures when I get everything together.

The key to having them last is to avoid touching them, take them on and off as little as possible (if a long life matters to you)

Ive even had some lower end ones last a few years, the one Im currently running is from XPS and was only $30 I believe, holding up great

Yup, they get brittle after a few months and best is to avoid taking them off, or be very careful when doing so. On some cars, they just get ripped up the moment you remove it.

Ive taken mine off about 100 times lol. Just be gentle. I like to use compression springs to hold it on, instead of the typical piano wire as well. And if you have a T3 housing, get a T3 blanket. The "T3/T4" is what I have now and it fits loosely over the exhaust housing.

I wrapped my bike exhaust bare handed, but the lava style wrap was brand new and still oiled/flexible. I can imagine getting pricked with a dry, formed piece is like getting poked with fiberglass.

Do it enough and your hands get immune to it. Working with BMW parts on the assembly line my hands used to get red as could be and felt like little needles inside my skin. Now it rarely ever bothers me. Every now and then you get one but overall it's not bad.

Do turbo blankets actually keep the temp's lower? I had a PTP before and It didn't do **** for me...

Do you have a laser thermometer or thermals camera? these are the only ways to test this other then the hand burn test

the definetly make a big difference, I prefer the titanium versions myself

The problem with turbo blanket is that it retains too much heat for road race application and also a bit after engine shutdown.
Best is to use some form of shield to deflect heat from sensitive electronics components...

I completely disagree. The point is for the turbo blanket to retain as much exigent thermal head as possible, to help with turbine wheel efficiency ( some additional spool characteristics are a by-product of this phenomenon).

The blanket also helps lower ambient temperatures in the engine bay, from additional radient heat. this is not the same as lowering engine coolant temperatures, so forget about looking at your water temp gauge believing it will help you.

This is also separate from actual EGTs that are created from internal engine cylinder temperatures. High knock-resistant fuels , spark plugs, and timing are responsible for that area.

Turbo blankets are honestly an essential part of a balanced breakfast of turbo champions everywhere!

I know it can help performance a little bit, I am saying it is harder for the turbo...

No. It's not "harder" on the turbine housing at all, if it's at least a quality turbine housing. I"m still trying to understand where you're getting this information from. I'm not asking for "proof" here, I'm just confused about your speculatory posture. Nothing more.
