It looks like someone threw them into a media blaster or parts washer. I would defitetly ask your machinist about how to smooth out the skirts and wrist pin surfaces before they go into the block.

I've seen pistons come out of a parts washer and they look exactly like that. I used them as is fine. However if you can get them smoothed out again do it.

WTF? I would ebay those turds ASAP. I can only assume that un-coated pistons would create much more piston-to-wall friction than unmolested pistons.

I got them for an extremely good price from pacific performance, but can someone give me first hand experience if I can use them like this or if someone has info on getting them machined

I wouldn't be real happy that the piston ring grooves have been bead blasted...

i would expect that your builder can decide very easily if he can use them or not.

Who the hell would do that anyway? Only the dish should have carbon build-up to begin with. The sides and bottom of a used piston are always clean.

Well then what happened to the finish?

If they're still smooth, you can get them coated. But that costs money, and you'd be better off buying a different set of pistons.

By the way, how much did you pay? A good used set is only $200. I can't imagine you'd be on a tighter budget than that.

I payed 275 for them and some crower rods, how much would it cost to get them coated and would it be worth it

Oh, well heck, you scored already if the rods are good. I-beam I'm assuming? I don't know much about the coating process or cost. I think Endyn/Wiseco pisons are coated.

Found it. Lots of info here. Look to spend about $150 to coat 4 pistons:

HighRevn,

It seems like your serious about building your engine and building it right... If you are, why waste you time of trying to fix these pistons. Your engine is only as strong as its weakest link, and this looks like one hell of a weak link.

If the sides of those pistons are as rough as they look, the piston to wall wear is going to be rediculous. Even if you do have them smoothed they will never be as good as new/unblasted used ones, and therefore, will always be your weakest link.

My advice: Use the rods, ebay those pistons, find a better used set or preferably a new set of pistons.

I know your tight on money, but ask your self, will saving the $200-$300 now be worth spending the $700-$1200 later to rebuild this whole thing once it ***** on you cause of these pistons?

it looks like someone cleaned them with oven cleaner. that's why the finish is messed up.

i did this with my stock ones just to find something to clean them. works well but im not sure if it hurst the piston.

platinum.

Tsk tsk. No jacket?

I know how that goes. I frickin hate wearing my jacket. It keeps me from being able to turn my head so I can never look behind me. I just gun it an assume no one is in my blindspot.

But I've never been down . Well once, but no damage was done

If the pistons measure out fine, i dont see the problem in using them. If the cleaning process somehow caused the specs to be off i could see a problem but other than that they look fine. Pistons dont need to be shiny to work.
