Default unsprung clutch question...

I was wondering if you are supposed to have to ride the **** out of the clutch, or should it be more light switch like "on-then-off" engagement.

the reason being is that I have an ACT 6 puck unsprung with HD PP in an LS cable tranny transmission, and it just seems that I have been really riding it a lot at traffic lights and anytime I stop. I haven't hurt the clutch in the least bit by doing so, as it still holds to 8000 in the top of 4th gear, but I was just curious if other people were in the same boat as me...

Discuss...

mine is holding up fine .... just is annoying tring to feather it repeatedly in heavy traffic and having the car shake and justle upon engagement.

Running an unsprung clutch in a daily driver is alot of work. I don't know how you guys do it in stop and go traffic.

not as bad as most people think...EXCEPT, when their is construction or a traffic accident which forces one to feather the clutch for a few feet and stop every 30 seconds for 30 minutes to 1 hour....

... only then you are hating life and embarassed when everyone stares at the funny noises your car makes with the shaking and harsh engagement...

My clutchmasters stg.4 sprung disc drives me crazy for my stop and go paper route. Why did I buy a ACT 6 puck unsprung??? Nobody will ever know...

Thank god I got an Action sprung clutch! Still a quick and nice engement, but it's really nice for the street with minimal clattering. Hell I shouldn't really be talking I have never been in a car that has an unsprung 6 puck ! But listening to you guys amde me already hate it.

BTW feathering makes more wear on the clutch, but less wear on the tranny/axles/shafts..etc. And vice versa for quick engagement.

it just seemed like I was really slipping, and feathering it more than I was used to, but before I had always had a hydro clutch too. I was just wondering if that might effect how you drove w/ the unsprung too.

It really feels good when I ****** 3rd on the Drag Radials and it clicks my teeth together...

I hated my sprung 6 puck (ACT) so, I can imagine the unsprung .

I thought that my flywheel would be all messed up from chatter (chattered all the time), but I took it off and to my suprise, it was still in great condition and you could see the machining marks still after 12k! And this thing gets more wear then anyone due to the fact that I use it on my paper route which is more stop and go then I care to talk about...

springs dont have anything to do with the feel of hte enguagement... that has to do with the material its made of.

that being said.. i have no problems driving an act 6 puck xtr6 in the h22 civic..

I've got an ACT HD plate with an unsprung 6-puck in my CRX and it's pretty brutal at times too. I've found the best way to get it going without riding the crap out of it is to get the gas to about 2k and then feather the clutch for a split second until the car gets moving, then press the clutch so the engine is idling, then smoothly release the clutch and when it grips get 'er going with some gas.

In this way I avoid riding the clutch until about 2k as you would with an organic and 90% of the time it's undetectable as a 6-puck from outside the car except I start off a little more slowly, which is fine by me.

Sometimes the clutch chatter sounds like the damn thing wants to climb out of the bay and run off on its own, though I should mention that I drive ~40 miles 5 days a week to work in heavy traffic, so I've had a lot of time to perfect my methods
