Unhooking the BOV for racing ?
Does anyone unhook the vaccum line that controls the BOV when they are racing ?
I did it last night and gained 1psi, and when I shifted the BOV still let a little boost out, just not as much as normal, I personally think it worked well.. Just wondering what you guys think about the idea..
I still got waxed by a modded 03' VW GTi 1.8T, even though I did miss 3rd, had a full tank of gas, AND had to short shift every gear at 6000rpms instead of 7K.. Excuses, excuses...

What?
The BOV is there for a reason, even more importantly while the engine is being worked over hard.

The BOV isn't going to hurt the engine at all, maybe not so good for the turbo, but as long as you don't slam the throttle shut ( just do a half-*** power shift ) it shouldn't cause that much compressor surge ( if any ), plus its not like I'm using a 150K mile volvo turbo at 22psi, its a basiclly brand new WRX turbo at 10psi...
Why don't buicks use BOVS ?? B/c they don't let the throttle close between shifts, WELL... Neither do I....
And I'm talking about just one maybe two races, then hooking it back up, not driving down the street racing people from a role or anything...
I guess no does it...?? Minus the ledendary Buick GNs...

umm... GN's dont use BOV's because they are automatics... Automatics dont need BOV's as much because the throttle doesnt shut in between shifts, it slips from gear to gear.

ok dude im pretty sure your car is not fast enough to risk doing that. I don't know.. I could be wrong but judging by you saying that you use a stock wrx turbo there is a high chance that i am right.

You're fine so long as you don't just off the throttle while the turbo is spooling. Even then, at 10psi on a brand new turbo I doubt you'd really make a mess of things. That said, I've got a BOV for a reason so it's staying hooked up no matter what. Is 1psi really worth it?

to me, unhooking the BOV to gain an extra 1-2psi sounds like a big
i can't even imagine any positive results from this...
that vacuum line should be holding the valve CLOSED under boost.
compressor surge is NOT your friend.

if you want some extra boost, pick up a boost controller.

NO NO NO!
You do not want to do that.
True, you will get bad compressor surge, but the odds are that's not going to hurt anything if you do that a few times.
However, there are two problems:
1. If you unplug that line, you have a big boost leak, and the car won't run right.
2. The BIG problem here, is that the manifold pressure coming from that line is what holds the BOV shut under boost! The springs in the BOV only can hold against a couple (5-10) psi of pressure, beyond that they will leak.
You do not want to do that.

I don't think so. I smoked one a couple weeks back that was chipped...I mean smoked him. And don't unhook the BOV. If you want more power up the boost, but why would you even have bought a BOV if you were just going to unhook it when you needed it most?!!

i know 1.8t's make this much power because at the dyno i go to (Elite Autosport), they post up how much each owner/car's whp that dyno's there, and sadly, 99% of vw do not make it above 250whp.
also just earlier today when i dropped my car off over there for a retune, there was a group of vw's dynoing...ranging from 1.8t's to turbo'd vr6's. sadly enough...there was a 1.8t running 16-17 psi only made 168-170whp. i don't know what he had(except for intake, exhaust, boost controller...yeah the basic stuff) but his car did look bling bling and most of the owners looked 30+ old. all i know for sure is that him and all his buddies were running chipped ecus and all hopeing to hit 200whp. the only one i saw that made it above 200whp was the a vr6 turbo...which made around 240whp.
still 200+whp for any turbo'd honda is easily attained.
compare that to a boosted d16 w/ wrx stock turbo.

The vaccum line holds the valve shut by applying the same pressure to the top as from the charge pipes while under boost. SO your bov will most likely leak if it's unhooked (unless its a ssqv, push type... anyways)
Secondly... why would you even do this? I want YOU to tell me what the benefeit of this would be... It makes absolutley no sense. If you have the thing hooked up and you don't let off the gas when you shift, well, then, the bov will not open anyways...
As far as the extra 1-2 psi of boost... Why would there be more boost? This is, for lack of a better phrase, the dumbest thing i've ever heard!!! LOL!

#1 stock GTi 1.8T turbos run 15.3 from the factory with its 170hp... This one made 240whp and 247FT./Lbs of torque...
$1200 car, $1100 in the motor and turbo system = $2300 and staying with a Vw that runs at least low 14's is good to me... Not to meantion its a full interoir H/B with a low compression D-series motor running almost 1/2 the boost it could run on pump gas..

damm, i never have a problem with eth chipped/intake/exhauts guys, i have liek 30whp less and keep up no problme, gotta love t3t4 top end

unhooking the bov to gain 1-2psi....you seriously have to be kidding me, im very sad and sorry i even opened this post, this might be the dumbest thing i have ever read.....just use the bov it really isnt making a difference probablly the reason your gaining 1-2lbs is cause its creeping from leaking out the line or around the bov....just turn yur boost up 1-2psi and use the bov, I still cant believe this was actually a post....

GN's turbos also have much bigger shafts.
ps, 1psi isnt worth the cost of a new turbo. get a reaking $2 ace boost controller lol.

if I am correct, when you remove the vacum line from the source and bov cant you spike the boost way up or am I thinking of somthing else

APR 100 octane chip, 3" exhaust, 3" forced motion DP...and my friends 337 HAULS
he destroyed my bolt on GSR swap.
i wonder what he does against 510whp?

GTi's were always a close race when i was all motor, now i **** on them for fun.
