Default Which Turbo Upgrade for WRX?

I am considering getting a WRX.

I-club.com doesn't seem to have very much info - not as much as here.

1) What are the specs for the turbo that will mount to the existing piping?
2) Is it that hard to replace the piping?
3) Are there any Garrett turbos that will fit?
4) What is the biggest/best turbo that will bolt onto the existing mounts?

Here are some that are true bolt-on turbos for the WRX.

APS SR series turbo:

Price starts from $1500 for the SR30 to $1800 for the SR50.

The IHI VF series:

VF30 is the same turbo from the JDM STI.

Price ranges from $950 to $1300+ for the VF34

PE (Power Enterprise) Turbos:

Price ranges from $1600 for the PE1818F to $1800+- for the TE laggy PE1820F.

These are all direct bolt on for the standard stock TD04 turbo.

Your other option is to go with a hybrid T3/T4 Garret turbo.
But that will involves custom Uppipe, DP, oil lines etc....

HTH

Holy crap that's a lot of dough! Screw that!

No offense to the WRX lovers, to each his own, but I think the car is ugly and after paying that much money for a Subaru I would hate to have to spend that much on a new turbo. That's half the price of a complete kit for a Honda!

Yeah, but I wouldn't mind spending $1800 for ~500hp

Hehe plus the price of the car, which the other guy said is $20k. I don't think I would ever pay 20k for any car, but especially not for a suped up econodeathbox!

No ****! There is SO much info on that site. I took me a month or so to absorb it all before I posted. Just do a search.

wrx's are 20k brand new.
Noope, MSRP is $24.5K, and that is with no options. invoice it 22.5K (bare). Nicely equipped is $25-8K.

Holy crap that's a lot of dough! Screw that!

For one thing, the SR turbos are overpriced IMO. You can get plenty of OE WRX STi turbos (22, 23, 30, 29, 34 , etc, etc) for under $1000 that'll support 300whp and run low 12's on stock tires full weight. There aren't that many aftermarket turbos out yet (the ones that ARE out or WAY overpriced).

Once the bolt-on garret kits come out, then we'll have some easy bolt-on 10 and 11 second turbo. until then, it's OE or custom (that or $$).

That's probably a good thing. When you work hard and are able to buy things yourself (and live on your own) you'll feel a great sense of accomplishment.

The WRX is an Impreza. There are many models. The other models have a 2.5L NA motor. The WRX is the only turbo Impreza here.

Well since I have had/tried/experienced quite a few different turbos maybe I can shed some light on this for you.

First off i-club has a BOATLOAD of info on turbos you just have to know what to search for I guess. That is the primary board I look at everyday so I guess I keep up pretty regularly.

Here is my current setup:

-VF22 (since about 7,000 miles now have about 35,000 on the car)
-catless 3" turbo back exhuast
-AEM CAI
-550cc injectors + GSS243 fuel pump
-Link standalone ECU soon to be UTEC
-boost controller, lightened pullies, and a bunch o gauges including wideband A/F.

So far the best my car has done, up here at Bandimere (5800ft. above sea level) is a 13.1@101 with a 1.91 60' = a high 12 with a low 1.8 or high 1.7 60'. This was also done on about 16-16.5psi on the VF22. The one problem that my VF22 and every other IHI turbo that I have seen up here (6000ft. above sea level) is their inability to hold more than say 16-17spi to redline... they have taper theoretically induced by the fact they are just "running out of breathe" up here in the thinner air. The only turbos that I have seen, so far, that have not shown this trait are the PE1820 and the hybrid garrett 50trim turbo I tested.

Here are a list of turbos that I can speak on:

1) VF22 - nice turbo. Laggies of all IHI series (VF22,23,24,26,28,29,30,34). Usually the higher the number reflects the newer "age"/timelife of the turbo so the VF34 is the one that is being used on the latest STi cars. Personally I like the VF22 it comes in full boost in 3rd gear at around 3700rpm for me. At sea level you could knock at least 200-300rpms off of that. VF22 has the P20 exhaust housing which is the biggest of the IHI series bolt-on hot sides.

2) VF30 - have a LOT of friends with this turbo and it's quite popular right now. A friend of mine and I run with pretty much identical modifications except he has the 30 and we are almost neck-and-neck. It has the P18 exhuast housing and as such spools a "little" quicker 3400rpm for full boost in 3rd.. however the other people I know that had them and went to VF22's seem to like the 22 better. FYI the VF22 has a true ball bearing center section vs. roller bearing of the VF30.

3) VF23 - pretty similar to VF22 but a tad bit smaller on the compressor side.

4) PE1820 - based on IHI turbos but probably one of the bigger "bolt-on" turbos out there (rated to 450hp capability). Power Enterprise makes them out of Japan and they are known to be pretty reliable. Biggest complaint I have heard about these turbos is they are laggier (probably/just guessing I would see 4200-4400rpm spool up on my car vs. 3700rpm for my VF22) and they take longer to come back on to boost between fast shifts (1/4 mile type driving). BUT they do hold some of the fastest trap speeds for 1/4 mile performance to date. I know a guy in Denver with one and a FMIC and he sees his full boost of 19psi around 4500rpm.

4) Then there are the SR series of turbos. Personally I think these have the best potential as they are made with some of the best parts. They are full garret balistic dual ball-bearing designed turbos. Overpriced yeah probably but considering a SR40 spools a bit quicker, produces more tq on pump gas (from dyno I saw on i-club do a search for username wr_exe) and are about the same price as a PE1820=$1550 new vs. SR40 = $1650 new. I currently have one of these on order and am hoping/been told to see about 4000rpm full spool.

5) turbo specialites hybrid garrett turbo. Basically about the same thing as the SR series except cheaper and they use cartridge bearing center sections vs. dual ball bearing. I tried out a 50-trim compressor side mated up to a P20 IHI exhaust housing side and bottom line it was just too big of a turbo. I am talking full boost in 3rd gear around 4700rpm with redline only a short 7000-7500rpm away (Link ECU allows me to set my redline whereever I like ... within reason). On the hwy this thing BLOWS the VF22 out of the water without a doubt. But it was just too laggy for a daily driver. If you want this kind of power AVO has garret bolt-ons that require/come with new uppipe and downpipes for installation.

Now let me also add a little bit more. Choosing a turbo GREATLY depends on what you want to do wtih the car as you probably already realize so here is a quick ranking of hp potential of each turbo going from least hp/less lag to most hp/most lag:

-stock TDO4L mitsu turbo
-VF29/VF34/VF30
-VF23
-SR30 - a tad less power as VF22 but quicker response.
-VF22
-PE1818 (P18 exhaust housing = smaller = better spool at sacrifice of top end power)
-PE1820
-SR40 - theoretically, from looking at APS website/compressor maps, makes just a tad more power than 1820.
-SR50/hybrid garrett 50-trim.

PLUS there are going to be a LOT of garrett systems coming out in the next year as well probably in the price range of $1500-$2500 BUT that will include the new uppipe, downpipes, external wastegates, and turbos.

Hope that helps a little.

try to do an awd conversion on a honda, let us know how much that runs. i would run the IHI turbo on the wrx, the aussie's are top notch when it comes to performance subaru parts.

i have been looking at i-club.com for a month now and i still haven't read everything. at first i didn't know **** about wrx's and was overwhelmed when looking at that site. now, after many long nights of reading, i have a better understanding to say the least. i won't even have my wrx for at least the next 2-3 weeks, and i've already ordered my UTEC and have a nice list of mods planned.

just go there and read.
