turbo or swap?
hey, I've got a stock 00 civic dx. im debating on either swapping out the motor for a b series or just boosting my d16. im on a tight budget and a friend of mine says i can get turboed for about 1000. how much hp could i gain from running 8 lbs of boost? how much of a difference would i feel from that kind of turbo? would i be able to run with SIs and GSRs? any help would be great. thanx in advanced.

Re: turbo or swap? (supersonics1996)
you'll get more horsepower by turboing your car, but its not going to cost you $1000. It usually costs people that have some of the parts already that much. And if you do turbo it for $1000 its going to be with shitty parts. But you will definately be able to hang with gsr's.
Turbo = best bang for your buck
All motor swap= more reliable but not nearly as fast

You can boost your car for right around a grand if you really shop around...maybe hit up a junkyard and pull a turbo off of a volvo, dsm 450's, ebay IC pipes, if you get lucky you can get a fmic from a junkyard as well, oil return and supply kit, bov, and an obd2-1 jumper, p28 and get it tuned...and at 8lbs you will beat most b series swapped cars...h's might be a lil tougher and forget about beating k swaps. My friend has a d16z6 and he's beat gsr swaped hatches, type r swapped coupe, etc etc...we never raced when i had my h series swap but i think he might have gotten me.

how many threads do you need to make like this??? anyways I'll post my same response here for ***** and giggles.

-replacement motors/trannys are extremely cheap(can be had for under 600 for a complete motor/tranny combo)
-it will weigh less than a swap(trust me, had tein tech s springs before the swap, after the swap the front was about 1/2" lower)
-if a cop pops your hood they aren't as likely to notice a turbo(if you make a custom heat shield) as they would a bigger DOHC motor
-Parts for D's are cheaper (generally, I've yet to see anything more expensive, although I have seen some comparable parts at the same price) than B's
here's my personal experience:
I started out with a lowly EG CX hatch, ended up getting a b16a swap, got it BAR'd and did quite a few add ons(to get to 160whp & 110ft/lbs). After almost 2 years of swaped hatch I ended up trading cars for one with a d16z6 which I plan to turbo soon. With a greddy kit at 8psi, and a good tune I'll get in the neighborhood of 175whp
something to consider since you live in CA is smog legality, finding a b16a2 or an obdIIB jdm swap is going to be pretty hard. I'd just reccomend a CARB legal kit like the edlebrock one,Boosting your motor around 7-10psi on a complete edlebrock kit will give you more power than a stock swap and with that BBt28 turbo turbo lag will be nearly non-exsistent(AND IS CARB LEGAL FOR YOUR CAR), of course you could piece together a kit for much cheaper but it wouldn't pass smog. If I had it to do all over again I never would have bothered with the B series and just done a mini-me(or a full z6 swap) and a turbo.</TD></TR></TABLE>
