turbo the sohc?
Dude I asked the same question a couple of days ago, and I haven't got many responses. First thing to ask yourself is, "how much power am I looking to get?" Then ask yourself, "how much money do I have?" These answers are huge to helping you decide what to do. I have a D16 with 156K miles on it, and I am asking myself the same question you are. If you have a very good supply of money then buy the B16A2 DOHC engine and turbo it. It is a very easy swap from what everyone tells me and I know where you can get a new B16A2 engine, trans, ECU, motor mounts, etc. for $3000. BRAND NEW!!!!! You might have to wait a couple of months to get it but that is a damn good price. Keep me informed on what you come up with. Later.
IF...your engine is in good condition (compression test, etc) I'd say turbo it...when it does eventually go then you can get another one for 500-700 and just swap it out.
Im getting 200whp out of my SOHC and im real happy with it...with basic turbo you could get around 160whp safely...Ive got 130,000 miles and still running strong.
Like has been said, a lot depends on what your goals are, how much money you have, what kindof horse power you want, how much you wanna boost etc...
ie: If your happy with 150whp and dont want to boost over 5.5 psi definitely keep what you've got. If you're looking for 220whp that could be a different story.

Don't bother boosting the 150K D16, it's would be a waste of money and time. If you want some power you need to find a GSR engine(B18c1) and swap it. With that engine you will have about the same power as boosting the D16, it will be a bit more reliable and you won't need to worry about the compression of the old motor. Later on after you have saved $$$ go and get a turbo kit. Might take a bit longer than just boosting your current engine but you will be much happier in the end.

150k is a lot of miles...I'd do more than compression/leakdown test it..I'd thoroughly Examine the motor before attempting to turbo it. If everthing checks out...go for it... my turbo D16 was fun

With 150k miles, you're asking for trouble.. in this case, I'd say look for a decent B18C1 or just go B18B/B20 and turbo later, unless you wanna spend $4-600 on a complete D16Y8 with like 50k miles. BTW, me with my lowly D16 Turbo jus got done ripping a 99-00 sedan hybrid a new one.. poor guy, had VTEC on the brain..didn't see it comming

hey there JJ is here to help...
you need to ask yourself some Q?..... do i really want to spend tons of money into this hobby/sport? if YES is your answer go ahead turbocharge your single cam motor. just make sure that you have another car just incase you blow up a head gasket, or crack the block and so on....
If NO, then do your self a favor and just swap it out to a bigger B- series type of motor. no head gasket to worry about, no more extra money to spend on those piggy back computer, or a crack block.....
but if your like me and just have lots of money to waste go for it turbocharge it anyway....and have a happy boosting....
but like i always say.......expect the unexpected...the BIG KABOOM!!!!!!

Just have the motor checked thoroughly. If it is in good condition, go for it. If you blow it, who cares, it'll cost you $200-$400 for another SOHC motor, and one afternoon...big ****. My buddy made 385whp from a D16Z6, so whoever says that SOHC motors can't make power, probably can't even spell Honda.
MatT3T4, you are my own personal Jesus Christ!
385WHP is phenomenal for any Honda engine, especially an SOHC. Maybe that will get some of these single-cam haterz off our dicks.

He used DFI. This is years ago too...He was cover car in SCC...but I forgot which one...like I said, this was YEARS ago...
SOHC accepts forced induction quite well from my experience. Mine was NEVER tuned (lol!), and I was running 10-14.7psi every day for a year, and ran low 13's with full interior and sound system. It's all about the setup you choose...my D16Z6 GReddy turbo setup was handing turbocharged B16A's their asses, because they chose the wrong applications. A bigger motor and bigger does NOT automatically mean a faster car. A bigger turbo, and low compression means LONGER spooling time, and thats when the little **** in the TD04 powered D16Z6 is passing you.

I was reading an older sport compact car issue. It's the one with the WRX on the front that says "let the *** kicking begin!"
there is a civic hatch back with a D16 NON VTEC SOHC motor that runs 10's!!
if you have any back issues, check it out!
Wow, 385 hp and 11 second 1/4 miles in a sedan and all with the D16. That should put an end to the argument that you need to swap the D16 to a bigger DOHC and then turbo if you want any real power, but it won't. hehe.
Thanks for sharing that Matt. By the way, what are you driving now? I thought you got out of the turbo scene several months ago.
