Transmission Disaster, Please HELP!
I bought a transmission over the internet, knowing that synchro's would need replaced. I brought the transmission and LSD to a local shop to have it inspected / parts replaced / assembled.
I ended up having to replace some synchro's (5th & reverse synchro & sleeve set), i got the parts & dropped them off at the shop. They called me, i paid them and pick up my tranny. I installed my tranny and found that 4th pops out under load and i had No Reverse.
I pulled the tranny back out, dropped it back off at the shop and they just called to let me know that the parts that we just replaced, were all chewed up again.
I'm very upset as the parts wern't cheap and i drove my car for about 50 miles of testing without even really getting on it.
Somebody please tell me what would cause these parts to get chewed that fast and why because the shop says "they have no idea".
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

I'd love to, but nobody local wants to deal with a 5spd tranny. They only do automatic's.
So i would have to get into shipping it.
I'm expecting that the shop that did something wrong will have to make it right. After all, i paid them to fix the transmission, the job was not done.

I agree. If you have access to the Helm manual for the car the trans came out of, a caliper, micrometer, and some feeler gauges, you can probably find out what went wrong. Follow the disassembly and inspection directions in the book, and you should have your answer. Manual transmissions are really pretty easy to work on, and the only intimidating thing for me now is following the directions. Precision and patience is required, but neither is hard with the tools at our collective disposal. Plus, once you acquire the tools and the manual, there's a TON of things you can do to save money.
Short of that, I'm sure there's a shop in Cleveland that can do it for you. Yeah, it's a bit of a drive, but it'd be worth it if you're not into the DIY thing.

i would have loved to do it all my self but i did lack some of the tools, mainly a shop press. I hoping that the current shop will be able to solve the problem, but if no and i have to cut my losses there, i will have to examine a good shop in cleveland. They are about 1.5hr. away from me but if thats what i have to do then so be it.
Any recommendations on a good shop in that area for 5spd tranny.

You really don't need a shop press. Just the right kind of bearing puller and a vice and some wood blocks. I don't own a press...I've done a dozen or so transmissions now. It's not hard, it just requires care. Like I said, once you get the tools, you can do a whole lot. Hell, I did my first transmission rebuild in a Rubbermaid tub in my kitchen. It can be done
from watching small claims court cases, your best bet is try to get the original shop to fix the problem.. hopefully they should have a warrenty on their work at least.. If you take it to another shop, you've essentially let the 1st shop off the hook because you didn't give them a chance to fix the problem..
they installed the new parts so they knew the parts were good to begin with.. So most likely it was installer error..
I would take it back and ask them to look at it closer and try to fix it again.. If they give you a hard time or the runaround, threaten to take them to small claims court.. This is why I dont trust my stuff w/ shops.. 9 times out of 10 , they don't know what the hell they're doing or they have some punk teenager tech work on it when you leave the shop..

well i talked to the shop tonight and he said that there is a bearing in the case cover that was shot, he thinks that the failure is due to the bearin that was worn out & overlooked.
He told me to call him tomarrow morning after 10 because he should have a parts list together. From the way he was talking, he wants me to re-order all the parts that i just ordered a week ago. These parts were honda oem parts and they wouldn't have failed if he would have checked everything before putting this thing back together and closing the case.
I don't have a problem paying for that bearing that goes in the case coz if he would have inspected it correctly i would have paid for that anyways, but i definatly don't think it's right that i should have to pay for all these other parts again (5th / reverse synchro sleeve set & other bearings).
I guess i will have to talk it out with him tomarrow morning. It's definatly not a conversion that i want to have. I really hate this.

thats completely their fault. they probably didnt align the brake plate in the case and it chewed everything up from nothing being aligned. and thats why it was poping out of gear and had no reverse. I would just ask for my money back and get it back from them thats their fault....
100% there fault, if other part were actually bad then they should have had you replace them. You took the trans to them and said fix it, its not like you went there and told them fix 5th & reverse synchro & sleeve set. They are responsible for all damages.

Can you explaine this a little more, or possible toss in a supporting pic.
I'm kinda confused as to what part your talking about. If that would cause my problem then i'd definatly like to see what your talking about. I need to figure something out as to why this happened.

on the mainshaft above the 5th and reverse sleeve set is a circle looking plate with a tab on it called a brake plate. when you put the top half of the case back on you have to align that tab with a slot in the upper case.
and guess whats on top of that brake plate? the bearing they are telling you was all chewed up sits right on top of it. so thats how that got chewed up when they fucked up putting the case on.
if they didnt align it,it will chew up the 5th gearsleeve set , bearing and brake and will pop out of gear in other gears because there will be up and down play on the mainshaft. so the problems would be related to 3rd 4th 5th and reverse.
most likely 4th or 5th will pop out because they are the upper most gear on the shaft.
the first and second gear sleeve set is over on the counter shaft so it shouldnt be effected.

excelent information here. I finally feel like i'm getting somewhere with this.
I'm thinkin that i finally have all the peices to the puzzle put together.
1. I bought a transmission that was broke to start with, planning to rebuild it. The person who had it prior to me put their LSD in the tranny and when to run it without aligning the brake plate (AKA the stop ring). They chewed up the 5th / Rev. synchro sleeve set and it welded it self together (and also messed up the bearing in the case). They pulled the tranny apart to get their LSD out and sold it to me with the stock diff.
2. I got the the tranny, bought an LSD, took it to a shop who noticed the bad synchro sleeve set for 5th / rev. They told me what i needed. I went to baranco acura online and got the parts, droped them off at the shop. They called me a week later and i picked up my tranny and paid them 200 in labor.
THE PROBLEM: They never noticed the messed up bearing in the case, there for i never ordered that coz i'm a noob at trannys and didn't know any better than what they told me to order.
3. I drive the car 25 miles, notice problems with reverse since the start (due to the fawked bearing which i found out afterwords has a 1/16th of an inch of play in it).
4. I pull the tranny back out & take it to the shop, they take it apart, stare at it with thumb up *** for a while and then relize that the bearing is fawked. They tell me that they can do the labor again for free but can't help me with the parts at all.
5. I eat bullet. (have to buy more parts, including the bearing this time)
6. I bend over and take it really hard.
Now i pray that when he does the job again, the same thing doesn't happen coz i'd probly have a heart attack.

I wouldn't let them work on it again, if they didn't line up that tab then they are probably clueless and will probably screw something else up. My brother and I ship our transmissions to a guy to work on, just because he's really good -w- Honda transmissions (he has a small shop where he just does Honda transmissions) and so many others aren't. It's a PITA, but worth it to me if I know the job is done right the first time and that my transmission will work right and last a long time.
you would be suprised how easy the 5th sleeve set is to replace. its right on top of the mainshaft, you just take the case off and remove the shiftfork and swap the stuff over in a few minutes its done. the only way to expletive that up is to put the sleeve set on upside down (beveled edge goes up) or put the case on wrong.
the most work is taking it all apart and cleaning all the metal out which they probably didnt do.
if they installed an LSD I sure hope they shimmed it correctly and set the clearence to the case. If you didnt have to order a shim from honda they probably did it wrong. also did you make sure your speed sensor was working? because if they didnt swap over the speedo gear its going to have to come down again
and if the syncro and sleeve set was damaged the teeth on the 5th gear itself that lock to the sleeve set are probably bad...which will just destroy your new sleeve set in a few weeks you may get to buy another set plus a 5th gear which is about 80$

i understand what you guys are saying as far as taking the transmission back and just doing it my self, but the issue is that i paid this guy 200 bux in labor to do a job. I want him to fix the problem, weather i have to buy the parts or not. It's just the principal of the thing. He needs to do the damn thing right because that is what he was paid to do.
He's always got transmissions out the wazoo over there every time i stop by, it's a reputible tranny shop. Supposidy he has a buddy that works at the local honda dealership that he is going to ask to stop down an look over my transmission prior to him putting it back together.
I just wanna drive my damn car again!

wow, this story sounds similar to my engine build. why did you paid for the same parts again after he told you that he made an error by not replacing the bearings? That was a big mistake on your part, you shouldve never budged on that. Now you have a builder that knows he can give you shotty work and if something happens, he'll charge you up the *** and you'll drop down all your hard earned money on it. If it were me, and a builder fucked me off on a bearing that resulted in a failure on my parts id tell him that im suing or hes fixing my **** right. Then id tell him, if parts malfunction after he redo's it that i'd sue him then!
Same **** happened to me, first my bearrings went out, and my crank was destroyed and the builder tried to get me to pay for his shotty work: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1841625 I didnt pay a dime for any of the damage because it was his responsiblity to build working parts.
Then i had all kinds of **** happen after the bearring was fixed and him trying to get my engine to work. So i man'd up and stood my ground and everything worked out in the end.: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1874215
Man, i hate reading about people getting taken advantage of, im sorry to say thats exactly what happened to you bro. Next time you just gotta man up, and not take **** when you know youre right and the builder is wrong.

This is a rough situation and I hate to say it but this is what you get for providing your own parts. Alot of shops when you bring your own parts and state that thats all you want done will do just that.
I will say it is strange that the bearing failed 50 miles after the rebuild. IT is a possibility that they didnt have the correct clearance when they put all the gears back onto each shaft. They put shims in the case under neath those bearings to achive the correct clearances. If it was way out of spec 50 miles could deff. make a bearing fail. It is a pain when reshimming a trans case because you basically install one shaft at a time and put the case back together and see how it is spinning. Then do this each time when you add another shaft and you must crack open and reclose the case. I only ran into having to do this when the factory shims got mixed up.
The 50 miles that you were driving the trans were the gears grinding? Ask for the old (new) syncs and post pics of there teeth and I can let you know if the syns were shot.

He brought the shop his parts, but he said that they were supose to 'inspect and install' parts in his transmission. The builder then turned around and told him that he missed one chewed up bearing and thats why the transmission failed. Well, the builder did not thoroughly inspect the transmission and if he wouldve this whole thing wouldve been avoided by telling the customer that he needs additional parts. I dont think that he should have to re-pay for the parts because of an error in inspection.
I am just putting it to you how we would handle somthing similiar in our shop (not a performance shop but very high volume repair shop). If you brought in a trans and requested me to rebuild it I would require you buy a complete rebuild kit and not half *** it. In the same situation if you came in and said I want these syns put in that I am supplying my self, that is alls I am going to do is install your syns and be done with it. People all the time think they know what is wrong with there cars and think by getting there own parts they save a buck. Alot of times you can but if you had just gotten the parts from the shop that did the service you would not be in the same situation it would be covered under warrenty. Because the shop did not use there own parts and you brought your own they would not be required to warrenty any thing. You can say that the builder didnt inspect the bearings, but it will be your word against theres. (A full bearing kit is very minimal in price and doesnt make sense why you would even make a shortcut here) A bearing can fail at anytime and thats why whom ever did the service will not be responsible.
I wouldn't trust a shopt who can't work on a manual honda transmission. It is a VERY EASY transmission to work on. I was afraid of transmission work, but once I got it open I found it was very straightforward. Having a manual is very beneficial. In fact, if you get an online copy you should definitely print out the transmission section and take to the shop, any shop, so there is no confusion on their part.
I'd also be angry and demand they fix it for free......or they can hear from the BBB.

have you ever rebuilt a honda transmission? the bearings are 50-60$ each and theres 4 main rollers. plus the needle bearings in the shafts and all sorts of other things. theres no such thing as a complete rebuild kit. you inspect everything and replace whats bad. theres no such thing as a rebuild kit with quality oem parts. you have no idea what your talking about.....
