Tial Keeps Breaking Bolts in the manifold!??!
I am running a maxrev manifold, and a tial 35mm wastegate that keeps breaking bolts in the flange!! Its the 3rd bolt, and 2nd tial bolt. The heads just keep snapping off. Do you guys have any ideas as to why i keep breaking bolts?!?
HEAT expansion. hmm.. What grade bolts are you using? try a stainless steel one. Hopefully that will expand about the same rate as the flange and keep it from braking. Is there any chance the wastegate is hitting something when the motor torques?
I would suggest changing to a 8mm stud and nut set up, it will withstand the loads better than a traditional bolt fastener. You can get 8mm automotive studs at your local hardware store, as well as the 8mm nuts.
i don't think stainless is a good way. it will sieze in the mani. this info comes from a guy that i know who works at a machine shop. i wanted to use stainless bolts in my tial. the guy said that stainless steel bolts are not meant to be used in that application. are you using antisieze on the bolts? give kurtis at maxrev a call. he should be able to help w/ the problem. his phone number is in the link below.

stainless expands larger than grade 8 steel bolts. I like stainless for that fact that it rarely back out. As far as bolt snapping off, try studs or use clutch pressure plate bolts if you have soem laying around, those works out the best out of all

hmmm I might give that a go, what size are they??

Hehe...I thought its just me with this problem. I've snapped the bolt that came with the Tial 35mm, so it was then studded. After some weeks when I tried to remove the stud due to change over the blown gasket it wouldn't come loose and I snapped the stud in half again
. I carefully drilled it out, re-threaded to standard 8mm and replaced with a normal bolt again...Few weeks later this snapped again
.
Now I'm having to wait for a new flange before I can restud it...the joys of downtime....

i snapped a bolt on tial before.. and it was grade 10 bolt...
i purchased bolts from honda - seems like they're all grade 10 - holding up good so far.
