Is an Talon DSM intercool sufficient?
I have this intercooler to use on my custom turbo set up. I am using it no matter what so I am not buying another intercool.
However, will it be sufficient? Keep in mind that it will be better than no intercooler right.

That said; yeah it will work; the air coming out of it will be cooler than the air going in... but I believe the DSM ICs are set up so the air has to turn around 180 degrees to get in and back out of them, so you WILL have substantial pressure loss because of flow restriction (DSM losing 2-3 psi out of 15-18 isn't as big a deal as you losing 3-4 psi out of 7-8 psi boost). You will eventually replace it if you want to make big power, but it IS better than a sharp stick in the eye.

change that
at the end of your post to "DSM POWER", u idiot
its better than no intercooler....like boning roseanne barr is better than boning noone right???

If you want a cheap AND functional intercooler you need to look a little farther to the past - the Starion / Conquest intercooler is actually useful.

For being stock the factory turbo's side mount intercooler isn't that bad. It will support 350HP easy without crazy heat soak. They do have a pressure drop but who cares just turn up the boost. If you set your turbo at 7 psi and are only registering 4 than you know what you need to do. The main problem with the 2nd generation factory turbo Eclipses is that they leak boost. Being set stock at 14 pounds at only aquiring 11-12 on a good day. It's from the horrible wastegate. Anyway that IC is better than none and readily available, from the many DSM's who've upgraded to FMIC's.
Actually the 2G DSM boost leak is from the crappy plastic bov that they use. That intercooler isn't that bad, the 1G is about twice as thick and would probably be a better choice if you are on a budget.
Thanks for the no nonsense post. Some people can't seem to do that.
Have you ever heard "If you don't have any thing good to say don't say anything at all". I was just asking a simple question, and I'm sure other people were wondering the same
Yeah its the 1G DSM talon intercooler with the 1G BOV. I'm hoping to get decent results from it.

Toss the DSM stock BOV, but use the intercooler... Just My Opinion.
Like you said, that intercooler is better than none, but the BOV is a POS. You can get a nice used GReddy or something decent for $100.

I was not saying that at all. Take is as you will I suppose if you have nothing better to do.............anyway on with the tech shall we.
Every thing I have for the turbo setup is from a 1G dsm, turbo, IC, BOV.

The stock intercooler on DSMs are effective until about 15-17 psi, then they start to heatsoak like a *****. The 2nd generation BOV(95-99), really a compressor bypass valve because it's meant to be plumbed back into the intake, is plastic and sucks but the first generation BOV(90-94) will hold until 16-17 psi. The BOV will hold more if you "crush" it but you shouldn't have to unless you are going for higher than 17 psi. Vfaq.com shows how to crush the BOV. The guy that runs http://www.homemadeturbo.com has used it with good results and says that its sounds pretty good. Next time you need DSM info go to dsm.org or dsmtalk.com, they're the experts. Isn't this a honda site?

Yes this is a honda site, we al know this. bu tI think this is where people get confused a little. Just because its a honda site we can't tlk abot nothing else? Even if its hp and tech related to our honda's? Doesen't every one want thier hondas to go fast for cheap? I don't know about you guy's but if I can build a custom turbo setup for my D16Z6 for under $1000.00 (canadian) I would rather do that than spend $5000 USD for a turbo kit that will give me a little better results. Especially for those of us who are able to do thier own work and make thier own custom turbo set ups. I get pleasure ( not that kind haha) out of helping a young guy build a fast and reliable honda for cheap with what I have learned myself and from other. We have to pass down the knowledge.
So if informing our selfs on DSM tech is whats required to do that than so be it I say! If you tell a chevy or a ford or dodge guy something thing that will make thier car faster but its from a different car manufactorer, do you think they would poo poo on you about how its not ford or chevy or what ever? No cause those guy's are interested in high performance power to incorporate into thier cars no matter where it comes from as long as it would give them an edge.
And lets put it this way, would you guy's rather I buy and ford mustang or something else domestic and build that up and turbo or SC it? Is that what you want? Cause we all know Cubic inch power in a straight line is difficult to beat.
I choose a 4 banger honda for my ride, and I woulden't trade it for the world. but the way some people get on about the whole scene is kind of childish. I'm interested in making my sohc 4 banger a V8 eater, so what ever it takes to get to that stage I'l do it. I want to beable to ask a question on anything tech related that may work on a honda and get a sensible answer.
I appologize if I step on peoples toes with this post but us honda enthusiasts better smarten up.......................................400hp chevy cavilers and Ford focuses are coming up in the rear view in the very near future, did you see the feb issue of super street?.
Please support the interest and enthusiasm with open arms, don't shoot it down and **** people off. If thats what a honda enthusiast means in the US then I don't want no part.
My 2 cents.
Cheers

LMAO... yeah from now on we can ONLY talk about STOCK HONDA turbos and intercoolers. That's IT!

Are you retarded? Just curious, as a 1g DSM BOV is not a POS. That thing can handle easily 20psi, which is much more than any honda will be running for the most part. And a greddy Type-S for under 100? Where the hell did you find that deal? Tell me and I'll buy two. I think you need to research your prices a little more as they are closer to 200 anywhere you look. A 1g DSM BOV can be had for as little as 30 with the average price being 50, thats damn good for what you're getting. It just doesn't make as kool of a ricey PSHHHHHT
By the way the old starion/conquest intercoolers are seriously horrible. They have even more pressure drop than the DSM one's. Using one can actually hinder your performance, not by much but it is very likely. To tell ya the truth I know of a very very nice intercooler that can be had very cheap, and will provide quite literally the same cooling effects as a front mount.
I got my GReddy from a group buy for 180$, brand new.
If you can't find one that's in DECENT used shape for $100 I feel for yah... If I parted out my car, I'd sell my GReddy for $100, or whatever someone would offer me.

Im gonna be running some dsm stuff too. A modified starion intercooler and a 1g bov.
To answer your question. YES the side mount intercooler will work for you. BUT, you most drill holes in your inner fender well behind the IC so that the air flowing through it will have a place to escape, if not you might as well not even use the IC. If you take notice to DSM's they have slots or fins in the front of the inner fender plastic.

Sorry if I came off like a nerd...I just meant that going to an eclipse site for info like he was requesting would make more sense than asking here. It would be more accurate. Someone here told him that his BOV sucked and that the 2G wastegates leak boost, both of which aren't true. I dodn't mean to sound close-minded or anything, it's just that things like that are better asked to the experts.
