I don't have any pictures handy.. That setup is just horrible. First the hole needs to be larger in the flange. it needs to be alteast 1.5" diameter. the tube off it should also be alteast that big.. Then you also need to make sure the flapper can move enough. I just can't believe a shop that has any idea what they are doing would do that.. Do they ever work on turbos before? if they have not had turbo experience and you jsut went in and told them what to do you can't completly blame them.. Even the welding and stuff is junk.

They do a lot of turbo and piping work. They were suggested to me by quite a few people. Everyone was telling me "they're a bit expensive but they really know what they're doing, it's worth it." The shop kept telling me that too. Whenever I tried making a suggestion to the guy working on it he'd say "no make suggestion here, we are the best, we know exactly what we're doing" so I'd be like "umm, ok" and walk away.

I still don't understand though. The car was working fine before they touched it, and it doesn't seem like they touched anything near the flapper, or tube. They cut right after it. How would that affect anything? Thanks again for the help

Ohhh, now I see what your saying. Someone else made the part that actually touches the turbo, and that was working fine before. They just added the downpipe right about where the o2 sensor is. In that case, the flap must have opened too far and blocked the wastegate tube. Maybe u should look into why the guy had a set of vise grips on it, LOL.....

I went to quite a few shops around here to get a downpipe made and still ended up throwing that junk away, buying my own welder and getting some mandrel pipes from jcwhitney. Since then I've gone crazy and made about 5 flawless downpipes for all my friends....And still spent less than any one time at an exhaust shop...

LS_REX you're absolutely correct. It was there before and working fine. Which flap are you talking about? Sorry, I'm still a noob when it comes to turbo =\

That's the way to do it nowadays...wish I had a welder!

Inside that exhaust housing, right under that dump tube is a small flap that is pushed open by the actuator when a certain boost is hit. This lets the exhaust gases exit around the wheel in the turbo, thus regulating boost. Now if the flap was to open too far, it would basically block off the dumptube and all the exhaust would go through the turbine, and it would seriously overboost. The flap is prolly just hung on a burr inside the housing. I had a greddy 18g turbo that would do this if you opened it too far, even with the stock housing.....it just needed some cleaning..

Thanks a lot Rob, I'll pull the DP off and see what's going on in there. I guess there's some light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully my downpipe isn't completely worthless

I wonder how it got stuck in the first place. It was working fine until they touched it, then as soon as I left the shop I hit the gas and it overboosted. =\

Well, its not completely worthless, just not a good design. Maybe the guy didn't line the flange up too well when he put it back together and it hung up then, thats why he had the old vice grips on it.. I wish I could help you make a new pipe, but your a little far away.. If you need any parts for your motor, shoot me an IM... Me and my boys have a shop full of extra parts..
