Default Stock cam vs performance cam

When you turbo a stock motor, why do some people re-install the stock cam? Wouldn't you make more power if you keep the perf cam?

Confused!

I assume it would be because the performance cam is for N/A engines. Different things are happening in there with forced induction.

an N/A cam has over lap. a performance N/A cam has ever more over lap. over lap is when bothe exhaust valves and intake valves are open at the same time. so with a turboed car the air would just move straight throught the engine.

That is the same reason it is not very effective to FI a 2 stroke motor.

The air enters the engine the same time the spent exhaust is leaving.

Your stock cam will do fine with boost. Idealy, you want a cam with more lift and less overlap/duration to prevent boost from escaping the combustion chamber, this is where aftermarket turbo cams come into play. Crower makes a *supposedly* very good turbo cam for SOHC's, look them up.

very well said

there are turbo performance cams though with about the same N/A intake cam and the exhaust cam having alot of lift but very short duration while closing -- thus getting rid of alot of the overlap so air doesn't go right thru the engine.

yeppers, high lift low duration = turbo, low lift high duration = NA
