I think mr 93Lsivic covered it well a while ago, i'm sure he'll repost! I might do mine too now that I have time and plenty of it. I'm 2 days into polishing my tranny!

Its harder then you think. Start off with some low grit sandpaper such as 50 or 60 and keep on moving youy way up. Pain in the *** if you ask me because I tried it and the results werent that great. I did stop at 150 grit though

EDIT* This place seems like a good place to buy supplies for the do-it-yourselfers out there. http://www.deltasupplies.com/
Ok, this is what I did.
I started off using green Roloc discs to take off the major rough cast. Can do it by hand using a higher grit, but screw that--if you have any kinds of power/air tools, use them in the first steps of the process.
I then went with a 260,320,400,1000, and finished with 1500. FOr the hard to get places i used emory cloth and also a flapper type wheel for my dremel was also used.
Bought a polishing set from HOme Depot for $12 that included 3 wheels (i used the smallest) and also included 3 rouges. Use the white rouge.
THats it. Good luck, your hands will probably hurt for about 4-5 days. I would think that I have about 8 hours total in the compressor housing.

I'm well on my way, hoping to have it close to finished by the end of the weekend.
Using this for starters, could not find roloc discs at home depot.

and after last night:
It's starting to look good! If my compressor only had a larger tank, hrmm...

apexii... take the compressor housing off... dont do it all together... will make it easier and u dont have to worry about anything getting into the turbo itself
