started my car for the 1st time, engine noises?
last week, i just started up my car and everything seemed cool besides a couple of minor things. i was starting my car up today and noticed some ticking noises? i shut off the motor immediately. i pulled the plugs and all four were running rich/black. my timing was at 14-16 degrees. it may have been one hard pedal push when i was trying to increase my rpm. i think i went to 6-7 thousand on a basic base map... i pulled my valve cover and plugs and rotated my engine by hand. everything seems o.k. but what do i know. after two years of hard work, my luck. i was hoping that it would be my ignitor but does ignitor make ticking noises.... should i take my head off? thanks guys. i was hoping to post my sick hp dyno numbers today but plan b happenedl.

what kind of injectors do you have? valve retainers?
I know Ti valve retainers can add noise, which might be mistaken as valve chatter, also injectors add noise as well. I know i have dsm450s and Ti retainers in my engine and you can hear them tickin away... tis normal

Re: (turbotime)
actually i am using 1000cc precision injectors, no resistor box since i am using a motec m4. Alaniz put in ti. retainers dual valve springs , bigger valves(supertech?). the thing is that i already started my car a couple of times but for some reason that sound did come from that cylinder head-distributor area?
i just checked the valve clearance and everything seems cool.
i would like to start it one more time for some professional to check it out. the sound was sort of unusual. how much damage can be done by pressing the gas pedal to about 6k.??? tia. choiboi....

every built motor is going to have piston slap for the first couple minutes until it warms up and the piston expands. i wouldnt be worried about it if youre sure the motor was built with the correct clearances. also large injectors are going to make ticking noises

If you ran lean at that high of rpm you may have scored the walls of the cylinder. Normaly #1 will scuff the walls first.
You said you were running a base map, was this map for your built set up ?
Next time you start it. Pull the plug wires one at a time to see if the noise stops at any one piston. If it does, that piston has a problem.
Depending on how much damage was done, the engine may have to come out.

Re: (andysila)
just took my head off and all cylinders looked very clean... in cylinder four there is a microsopic line running vertically from top to bottom. seems like i may have not filed off the piston ring completely. when i took my turbo mani off, there was some oil coming out or cylinder four. it looked like a drool stain from the exhaust port down to the oil pan. all 4 pistons look good with no scuffings. i am thinking that it may have been the injectors and the titanium retainers.... do they really make sounds???? thanks guys. pomona 4 weeks away????

Re: (dunkd)
valve lash and valve clearance is same thing right? yea, .006-,007 intake and .007-.008 exhaust. i hope its my retainers and springs???? it almost sounds like the valves are not completely closing. i actually got bigger valves on the exhaust. i was thinking that they were hitting the pistons but pistons are smooth. thanx tho.
