Default Sputtering from 6k to redline!!! Ideas?

So I got my car up and running after we put in my Exedy dual and Quife LSD. Anyway I got on the highway last night and opened her up on pump gas at about 1 bar of boost...it boosts nicely till 6-7k rpms and it starts sputtering all the way to redline...it's more like a back fire type deal. Matter fact the guys that were with us said they saw all kinds of sparks flying outta the exhaust...not like a ball of fire but sparks like wind blowing on a fire out doors type ****. Can it be running to rich up top?

I had the car tuned...clutch started going bad...I took it to the track that same night...made 3 passes and the clutch went out. It was sitting in my garage since then till yesterday. I changed the plugs on it, gapped them but still doing it. Yesterday it was doing it more at like 8k...today it starts at like 6k (this is reading off the tach tho and we all know them things are pretty off anyway)

I'm taking it to Tony this week if he can but I was wondering if any of you have had this happen or might know.

Car has a fully built motor, Neptuned, MSD7 ignition, SC61...let me know if you need more specs or a better description of the problem

Thanks

this is why I stay away from aftermarket ignition systems.... I have better things to do than chase electrical gremlins down because of a non OEM ignition system.

Best of luck..

change your plugs, the exact same thing happens to my friend turbo B16 when he boosts 10 psi on the stock plugs, every couple days they the car starts backfiring in the upper RPM's and changing the plugs fixes the problem for a while.

Not at all. It's not much, but I made 441whp on a completely stock ignition system and many others have made as much as 550-560whp on a completely stock ignition system.

All you need to do is run a tighter gap and make sure your running oem wires and a healthy distributor.

If you are happy with 491 whp their is no need for the MSD7. I apologize in advance if you were planning on making over 550whp in the future because at those power levels even I would want an msd digital 7.

I would test the ignitor, ICM , and inspect the rotor while you are at it. How many miles on your distributor?

^ or lack there off.

Anyway yeah I was hoping to make close to 550whp at 1st but I think I'm ok for now...**** I just wanna get the freaking car running right....

anyway, UPDATE:

Tony hooked me up to a wide band...seems like it's running lean in the high boost levels. I'm changing the B&M fuel pressure reg today which got about 30k miles on it. The stock fuel filter that has about 50k on it (never been changed) If that don't work Tony thinks it's going to be a bad Fuel pump (walbro 255 intank with only 10k on it )

Nope I took it out to make room for boost...lol. I think Imma change my egt to a fuel gauge or just get another one...I just dont weant 200 gauges lol.

Anyway Imma hook up the oil sending unit to the fuel see if it's falling off after I start chaging out parts to see what fixes it.

You guys think the c16 might have messed something up. The car was on jack stands lifting the front up like 3 feet for a good 3 weeks. Any chance I might have moved some dirty or whatever into the tank or clugged the filter or what?

Would the c16 cause the fuel lines to go bad? It was tuned on race gas...by the time I got to the track my light was on so I just went back to pump gas...made 3 runs (***** footing it on a bad clutch) After that the clutch went and the car sat for 3 weeks

what plugs?

Also, check the coil wire tower on your MSD cap, on mine the red spacer was loose and started to spin at higher rpm due to vibration...therefore causing a misfire.

Definitely sounds ignition related to me.

I'm running the NGK V power 9's for plugs. I started at a 32 gap then closed it to 25 still did it. I got new plugs too...still nothing.

well update:

I changed the filter, nothing, then did the regulator nothing, then a new walbro 255 and STILL nothing. OK, so you guys think it's the ignition leaning it out under higher boost levels (it starts sputting it about .6 bar or so)

Imma, check the tower once I get off of work...any other ideas?

pump 93 octane what it was tuned on. We put in 5 gallons of c16 on the dyno...tuned it...I drove it on race about 100 miles (on the highway) to the track. Once i got there the gas light was on...I pumped about 4 bucks worth of pump gas...made 3 passes and that was it..I havent driven it since then (clutch went out) I put in a LSD and Exedy at my house and tried driving it once I got done (3 weeks sitting on stands) and this was happening

I think Tony checked that out when I went to dallas on Tuesday...I know he pulled the cap off and looked in there.

Make sure... He probably just inspected the distributor rotor, unless you saw him disassembling the distributor and testing with a multimeter.

How many miles on the distributor?

The reason I asked is that I had a b18c1 distributor with 90k miles on it but a brand new ICM and ignitor which tested within spec on my multimeter and still had my ignition breaking up top when dyno tuning.

With the type of power, and boost you are running its important to have a perfect distributor.

I forked out 350 dollars for a moroso distributor replacement and made 441whp on it without any problems.
