Default sohc turbo!!! :D

Hi, i dont post in the FI forum much, but recently, ive been getting interested in the sohc turbo setup. Im wondering, whats the cheapest turbo setup i could go with for an SOHC engine? Right now, im debating if i should get a gsr engine, or buy like, maybe a 99-00 D series engine and slap a little turbo on there...please give me some good advice, because i am a turbo noobie! : [ Thanks a lot, peace!

What car will this be going in?? Also do you have an existing motor?? You could go MUCH faster with a new turboed D, then you could with a GSR swap. check out

if i were you, and you wanted a new engine. I would look for a d16z6 (92-95 ex motor) and tranny. They will drop right in your car no problem. No wiring harnesses to deal with. Then piece a kit together.
used t-25 or something - 200
Mani - $50 for hf, 150 for obx, ebay one, or 200 for a strong log style
some injectors - used dsm 450's for $60 or RC 310's
tyrus ic - 225 or johnnyracecar.com
VAFC to tune you injectors 200 or uberdata if you can burn chips - free
some piping for the ic 150
clamps and **** - 40
downpipe - 200
thats pretty much it
so for less than 1500 you can be running some 13-14's
can do that with a gsr swap that cheaply
spend the extra money on some rods and pistons and BAM 12's for less than a 14sec GSR swap

That sounds absolutely sexy...13-14 sec. for 1500...wow thanks a lot, however, that doesnt include the engine! How much do you think i can pick up a 99-00 d16z6?

you can definetely put together a homemade/custom/junkard kit
for way less than 1500

try under 1000

you can get a FULL(including ic) greddy kit for under 1500,
and that is also a really good kit

I did exactly that ^ in a DX hatch except my turbo stuff was a bit cheaper and nicer. The best part is that if do screw up any thing a new log block is like 200 bucks. I can't seem to hurt mine though

The d16z6 motors are from 1992-1995. The 99-00 equivalent is the d16y8. I would deffinately go with a greddy kit since this is your first turbo setup. It is a simple kit to install and with the right combo of parts it can be a quick setup.

im gunna have to agree, I couldn't be happier with my greddy kit. Stock boost is still fun, I can't wait to get a FMIC/BOV and Boost Controller

I have to disagree about the kits. I'm not a fan of kits at all. Overpriced and underdeveloped.

Here is my "budget" for my upcoming setup:
WRX TDO4H Turbo, Adapter plate, gaskets, bolts, + shipping ($240)
HF Manifold ($20) Yes, deals ARE out there
Oil Lines ($80)
DSM 450 Injectors ($55)
Fuel Management (Still undecided. We'll say $250)
Charge Piping ($100 +/-)
Misc Nuts/bolts/gaskets/couplers ($150)
Downpipe ($200)
DSM BOV ($50)
Johnnyracecar Intercooler ($250)

Right there I'm at $1325. I realize there are probably a few things missing. It'll probably end up being less because I'm a deal hunter. I WILL wait till I find the best deal on a certain part. A lot of that stuff you might even get for free if you look hard enough. Point is, I'm still cheaper than a Greddy kit, PLUS I'll be intercooled, have a BOV, and run better fuel managment than the shitty Blue Box that comes with the Greddy kit.

My #1 tip: If you want to do a homemade turbo "kit", start doing a LOT of research. I can't stress this enough. Look through any turbo thread you can find and put together a "shopping list" and hit up the junkyards.

get the book maximum boost by cory bell.

and read it.

also u was selling a complete kit for 1300 bucks. so just look around and see what people are selling. as stated before get a 92-95 civic ex or si motor and trans. well actually just get the swap. and sell your old motor, and tranny for like 200 bucks. also vafc and dsm injectors work great. look for a set of 390cc injectors off of an auto TSI or GSX much better gasmilage and easyer to get to idle.

another option if u are into learning new things is urberdata. its just like hondata but cheaper.

ill be posting installs and writ ups on my Dseries rebuild and turbo install. so look for information early spring.

My advice is to stay away from the homemadeturbo.com setups. Its cool to find cheap and new ways to do things but if you look at that site those setups look fugly! Quality parts do cost more, but you get what you pay for. If your going to build it, do it right. Im not saying go out and spend 10k on a sohc, but build something you can be proud of. Just my 2 cents. ...P.S. no disrespect to homemadeturbo.com. I've met a couple of you guys and and your pretty smart guys but........ let the pics speak for themselves.

great thread, don't give up hope on the d series motors, as pointed out they have a lot of potential of done correctly. i can use cheaper parts but the install is something that you must do clean, it all depends on what you are looking for, simply power or bling factor! a 13 is pretty respectable with very little cost over a full swap along with some bolt on's on a b series, plus if you have to deal with smog, life is much easier when all you have to do is pull of the turbo stuff and roll into the smog shop. stick with the d, i think you will be happy with it.

I have a very inexpensive turbo setup on my car and it does not look anything like the ones you are talking about. I have about 900 into mine including afc & injectors. You CAN have a good looking kit and low cost.

that was some bs man.

so yeah, you get what you payfor because it comes with new shiny parts??
riiight... and the quality of a turbo kit is fully measured in how nice of a picture it takes!?

come on man, you have to have more brains than that.

the homemadeturbo kits are just as good if not better than high priced namebrand kits. it all depends on how good you make it.

and you can make it look just as nice and take just as nice pics,
its called CLEAN THE PARTS BEFORE ASSEMBLING,
however most of the ppl who put together these kits dont give a ****, because it really means nothing, and will get dirty and faded right away anyways, an engine bay is not a clean place.
