a small bit of advice from an experienced engine builder?
I have a dilemma.... well kind of. I have 2 x d16a9 engines. One in a car and the other out of the car. I am wanting to build up one of the engines for boosting. What I am wanting to know is do you have to remove an engine from the engine bay to fit forged rods and pistons?? if I have to remove the engine I shall start building up my spare engine and then swap them accross. if I dont I shall place all the parts in the engine that is currently in the bay. What im trying to avoid is de connecting then re connecting all those sensors etc aswell as rusty mounts lol

yes, you have to remove the engine. You have to get the cylinders honed for the new piston rings to seat correctly. Plus, it would be such a pain in the *** to assemble the block if it were in the car. If you don't want to disconnect wire harnesses, then your not ready for what you are planning to do.

Dude, He can hone the cylinder's with the block still in the car with no problem!

It would be a big PITA to install the bearings with the block in the car. Youd have to have someone hold the crank while you installed the bearings. It could be done I guess.
Yeah definitely dont try and rebuild the bottom end of any motor with it still in the car.
If you want to do it right there is a ton of torque'ing and precise measurements that need to be done to get the correct bearing's and make sure EVERYTHING is withen spec, and you dont want to be doing that laying on your back under the car!

Yea, the main bearings and the thrust bearings are a pain in the *** already, I can't imagine doing it with the block right side up (they would probally fall out every time)
Also, after the crank and all the bearing are in, the block can be put in the car and then everything else can be bolted on, like the head, oil pan,pickup, windage tray etc.,..

I don't see why he can't pull the head and pan, and rebuild it, hone from the top while the head is off. *shrugs* if you are one of those, "YOU GOTTA PULL IT MAN! ITS THE ONLY WAY!" type people, then do whatever. If you don't want to lay on your back, get someone with some 4 point hydraulic lifts, so you can stand up. I'm right there with you about pulling out the motor, disconnecting all that ****. I know its possible in the car? then I'm doing it in the car. My 2 cents.
due to my inexperience with engine building and the fact that time is no object with this project I shall probably start building up the spare engine I have whilst it is out of the car then just do a straight engine swap in a weekend. Is it worthwhile me getting a B eries engine with VTEC if im building it out of the car? rather than building up my other D series? I'll only want more power eventually... and B series seems to have so much more tuning parts on offer.. plus stronger internals for boosting. thanks for the replies so far
Well two things, one, you would be better off in the long run with a b-series, it just has way more potential. second, I'm not even going to comment opn the stupid idea to do the rebuild in the car.
so as a summary... the expert would take the engine out of the car... this is what I am going to do! Thanks for your suggestions
