Default recent change in spooling noise. bearing???

alright before the bashing startes I know I am a dumbass.
okay so the other day I had my intake pipe off my turbo to try and get to something. I left the rubber thing on there. buddy got in a wresk so I just got in my car (with the rubber thing on the turbo) and went to go get him.

long story short during that ride and ever since when it starts spooling after 5000 it kinda sounds like a supercharger. after I found out my buddy was okay(well he is still alive) I poped my hood to find that the rubber peice got sucked in the turbo inlet. it only did alittle damage to the rubber peice but doesnt look like major damage to the turbo.

has anyone ran into something like this. I thought that maybe a slight bend in one of the fins would cause the "whistling" effect, or maybe a bearing any help is appreciated as always.

check for shaft play and thrust play contact the manufaturer to determine service limits and then pray that the rubber piece got sucked in and melted away or is sitting in your intercooler waiting for you to take it out. Good luck

thanks all for the replies. its wasnt a big chunk just noticeable. I think that it kinda rubbed it until it was worn. so just the fans being damaged (chipped) it will make that noise? dont think its a bearing? boost levels still look the same cant really tell about the power difference though.

Warranties are not there to bail out idiots when they do idiot things.

The noise comes from all the turbulence you created by chipping the blades and changine their carefully engineered aerodynamic shape.

are any of the fins actually chipped? i dont see how a ceramic or steel turbine would chip from a small piece of rubber, i would think it would just shave it off little by little (the rubber piece) i bet its fine, take a picture of the turbine and post it up

are the inner fins bent badly? like inside the compressor housing? does it still spin?

I think youll be fine for a while, may want to put a screen on something in your charge pipe just in case it shatters or something

I havent taken it apart to see if the compressor fins are bent but yes it still spins and spools still gets to 14 psi. I know dumb to try but I didnt know what the issue was at first. yeah I have a honeycomb filter on my pipe just in case.

i think your ok it just prolly will lead to an early seal failure cause im sure that bend throw the balance off....

you only have one bent fin you should be ok, but like said before it will most likely cause a slight vibration and lead to premature bearing/seal wear. I would keep running it though

leave it like it is, trying to fix it will prolly do more damage than good

you may want to take the compressor housing off to make sure the inner fins are still ok

My ebay turbo came with a small curl like that, only smaller. I tried to straighten it, which worked, but it put a small crack in it, and i ended up getting a new one from the seller. So, if you do, i'd take it all apart, and use heat maybe, but otherwise if your still boosting and its not hitting the housing just use it, but you could wear out your bearings faster as it could make it out of balance when boosting. No proof to back that up though, just a thought.
