Default Rate my plugs

1 (left most) ->4 (right most)

This is the pic of #1cyl. It has the most color. Others appear to be running a bit rich if im reading them correct.

Sorry the pics arent the greatest. Even in macro mode the pics suck.

One question I do have about plugs. I know to get correct readings at full boost your suppose to turn the car off and check at the top of the run. Lets say the car is detonating. Would the small particles still show up on the plug even if the plugs are not checked at WOT?

TIA

p.s. if the pics dont work give me a few and ill get them fixed. Im not use to working with putfile but my hosting site is down right now

woudl also need a pic looking straight down at the electrode. #1 looks to be pretty good, a nice solid brown color, and the lead is colored ok, so you can tell its not too cold of a plug.

although it does greatly vary from when you pull the plugs, if you have bad detonation, you may see some white specs after you do a WOT run and return it to idle and pull plugs, but it could wash it out as well.

When I read plugs, I usually do a plug chop similar to what you do tuning 2 stroke dirt bikes. WOT pull to redline and then in with the clutch and shut it off as it comes down.

It's not a superbly healthy method to do this BUT, it's the only way to get a true read on them because as seen4ever said, a lot of the time they will clean up before you get them pulled just from running.

Ok cool. I will have to find a road where I can shut down after a pull and not cause anyone or myself danger.

Thanks for the help guys.

Don't we all have turbo cars? Sometimes I wonder how people manage to do a full redline pull and then shut off the car. Mmm...gotta love coking the turbo

I usually go for a short drive around the block, doing a few redline pulls and then pull back in my garage to check the plugs. If there's detonation, you'd probably find traces of detonationif it's severe enough.

As you will notice, I stated the disclaimer that this was NOT the most healthy way to do this.

But it is the most accurate. I prefer this method for nitrous cars but I have done it once or twice with a turbo car when time was of the essence lol.

i do it rarely, as i value my turbo, but really i'd rather turn the car off hot once or two, rather than buy a new engine. the turbo can handle it a few times, if you have a BB turbo, then there is really zero concern since coolant continues to flow.

actually i've noticd my oil temps rise greatly when i sit still, normal cruising is around 150-170 degrees in my oil pan, siting still i get up to 200 pretty quickly and then i turn the car off.
