ran rich and melted a piston
i recently had my h23 dyno'd... a/f was good maybe a little on the rich side at 11 to 12:1...i had hondata s2000, walboro pump, and precision 1000cc injectors, i had aria pistons, crower rods, and golden eagle sleeves...i didn't have it for more then a week after the tune and after one hard from a 60 punch into 3rd gear to the end of fourth gear my car shut down... we pulled the head and the piston in cylinder one was melted and the wall was severly scarred...the other pistons looked perfectly fine...the injectors in the good cylinders were black, while in cylinder one it had oil on it...we checked the injector clips just in case that cylinder wasn't getting fuel but it was fine...anybody have anyclues as to why this could happen...sorry if i left any info out...just pissed and looking for answers

Could be a bad injector. Cylinder scarred prolly from the expanded/melted piston. Hell, they ARE GE sleeves though.
Boost level?

just because only one piston melted doesnt mean it has anything to do with injector failure, altho it is very possible.
do u have any idea what your total timing was at? what was the compression of the motor. what kind of gas were u running?

I'm going with this as the culprit.
Who tuned the Hondata?

Re: (kpt4321)
it was a little on the rich side at 11 - 12 it wasn't totally flat line at 12... just lookin for answers as to what else could be the problem other than the af

One thing is for sure...you didn't melt the piston because it was too rich...it melted because it was too lean.
You might have had 3 very rich cylinders and one very lean. You were only getting an average reading of the 4 cylinders..not individual. I would look to one faulty injector first.

How much boost where u runing? What octane gas where u using? and how much degrees did u retard per pound?

Re: (SpdFrk)
**** you gotta be worse tan prolly 10:1 a/f to melt a piston , faulty injector maybe , bad gas maybe. you never know . i think maybe a lean condition with too much timing did it.

That's not rich, and definately not enough to cause damage.
Stock 1g DSM's run 9.3:1. Stock 2g's run 9.5:1. Cars like the Evo and STi are in the same range, no leaner than 10's.

The thing about injectors are you get what you pay for. Also, coils in general don't like to stay on for extended periods of time. I don't like to run over 80% duty cycle on saturated or 85% on peak and hold. Your just pushing stuff to hard and a coil failure on even a quality unit can really ruin your day LOL.
With that said, I ran my stock 450 DSM injectors to 100% duty cycles all last summer on pump gas. I'd never do that on a honda though. I have a backup on my eclipse in the way of a knock sensor. Its their to protect my motor even when I'm not.
Send the injector out to be electrically AND mechanically tested before running the car again.

i dont think he was running a very high duty cycle on the injectors
