quick turbo question
thanks for the answers
I know that a blow off valve releases pressure (compressed air) so it doesn't explode, I guess I just thought of a wastegate as getting rid of waste. I guess it is more of a bypass to reroute exhaust.

Why do so many people think this? Its not an insult or anything but I'm just saying lots of people think this.

the blowoff valve releases the builtup pressure when you slam your throttle closed under boost, rather than letting it destroy your turbo fins. the wastgate only allows the turbo to build so much pressure.

Yea, BOV just releases the pressure when the throttle plate closes. When throttle closes, the turbo is still making boost, and it has no where to go but backward causeing " compressor surge". Wastegate stays shut until the desired boost is reached, then opens to realease excess exhaust to keep the boost steady.
Go to http://www.howstuffworks.com and look up turbo. Expains it very well.

well they both relieve gasses...the wastegate relieves exhaust manifold pressure to keep the turbo from boosting more than what the system is set to and the BOV releives intake pressure so the turbo does not see a huge spike on the compressor side when the throttle closes.
