Default Question about what causes blown rings

Someone I knew just blew one of their piston rings and when I told them just to get honda ones on their aftermarket pistons, they said they didnt want to get them because that's what blew before. It's actually the ringlands that get messed up though right? Hence, you can use the stock rings on forged pistons and have them hold up to more abuse because its the ring lands that are stronger? Just want to make sure. Thanks.
