Default Question about oil catch cans

I already did a search and just came up with how to properly mount it and how it works. My question is about the baffled ones. I know that it will catch the vapor and what not, but what if I use a can without steel or copper wool sponges in them? Will it just make it pointless to even have a catch can or what?

there has to be some sort of baffle or planned turbulance for the vapor to pass through for the can to do what it is supposed to do. similar to a chambered muffler.
