Default Question about mixing oils

Our oils are milti-viscosity.. So if i'm to take sae20W and mix it with sae40.. would that make it sae20w40? or is it just not that simple. And if it possible to make it work, how much of each should i add?

not at all.. i take it you're the expert when it comes to gasoline oils - i'm not.. care to explain why this idea wouldn't work?

If I'm not mistaken oils are rated on viscosity and the temperature range within which a level of viscosity is maintained. What qualities are you looking for that can't be found with an off-the-shelf motor oil? What type of environment?

No.

Sae20W is a single viscosity.

Sae40w is a single viscosity.

Mixing them togeather will yeild a 20 and 40 weight combination, not a multi-viscosity oil.

alright.. after reading the right reference.. i understand how multi-viscosity oils work. for example: 20w base + polymers would increase it to 50 as the car warms up..

you average the two together and get 30w

thats probably what it would end up doing.. now.. let me give this a better try..

if i'm to mix sae10w40 with sae30 will that increase it to say.. 20w40 (or just make it higher than 10w40)? - does that make sence. i understand that i would have ot send this out and have it tested.. but i don't want to do anything until it makes sence.
