Default problem shifting on new build

i cannot downshift into 4th. i had this itr tranny in my last car before it was totaled, and it shifted perfect, no grinds. it does not grind, the gears mesh well, only the problem is it wont go into 4th when downshifting. i have to double clutch from 5th to 3rd, and from 3rd it goes in to 4th fine. shifting up is no problem either, but i can feel a little more resistance when i upshift into 3rd and 4th also, so i know those gears are the problem. i also know that the shifter being used is different, (used to be dc short throw on old car, now skunk2) and i know the linkage is different( old was 97 dc2 b series, now the linkage is from older 94 dc). this car is older, its a 94 ls. i was wondering what the culprit could be and what i should check before i buy a new shifter, linkage, or bushings. would worn bushings cause a problem like this? could it be the linkage? the whole shifter just has more play in it than i would like. i want it to be tight, so what needs to be changed? any thoughts are appreciated.

its possible that the linkage or the part the linkage connects to on the tranny (what shifts through the gears) got slightly bent during your car getting totalled..
