Default Priming oil lines

I finally got back to my project today and for the first time had the starter turn over the motor. I dont have my turbo/manifold/downpipe hooked up yet. But i figured I would get the oil lines ready anyway.

Now heres the thing, it cranked and cranked and cranked and no oil came out of the line. I checked the oil level... topped it off... tried it again, and nothing

So before i start pulling the lines apart to look for clogs or whatever, Is it possible that the 7' or so of 10AN line to my oil cooler might need to fill up first?

The way my setup is, the oil cooler is plugged into a sandwich plate on the filter location. The oil feed line is Tee'd off at the pressure sensor.

any ideas? Does the oil circulate through the filter before it gets sent to the pressure sender?

which the turbo feed? Normally it would go through the turbo to the drain line back into the pan.

Its not hooked up so its in a plastic cup right now.

maybe, but i would figure i would get something out of it. at least a few drops. Im not gonna hook up my turbo until I know its going to be properly oiled. I dont wanna leave it up to chance whether or not its taken care of.

Always prime oil cooler lines when first installed!

What do you mean by that? Every thing has just been installed.

You've got alot of space to fill. I'm sure it's going to take more than a couple cranks. Install the turbo, drop some oil into the inlet, and install the oil lines. When you start your engine, I doubt the turbo will spin anyhow. If it does, well, you just put oil into the inlet before installing the line.

would the oil go to the cooler lines first for any reason? Or do you think its just taking a real long time to fill them all up at once?

this may seem kinda dumb but are your spark plugs in? I know you ot trying to start it but if they arent you wnot get proper pressure inside the motor.

spark plugs are in. I thought about taking them out to make it a little easier on my starter... I dont see why no compression would cause the oil pump not to spin...

Someone on another site said it just takes a longer time than expected. Ill let it crank a bit more and see if I get anything.

take the plugs out.. the engine will spin over ALOT faster. it takes RPMS to get the pressure up.

the faster the pump goes, the more it pumps.

unplug the distributor so you dont get fuel everywhere/zap yourself

if you pull the plugs you dont have to worry about over heating the starter.. its no work at all for the starter to turn over the motor w/o plugs in it.

i usually go for about 1.5 to 3 minutes depending on how many extra oil lines there are, etc

You realize it will have oil pressure in 0.5 seconds if you just start it right?

The advice from every reputable source is to prime it before I run it. Thats even what the turbo's instructions said that came in the box when i got it. Thats what im doing.

Plus what if i dont get oil out of the line, say its clogged or the pump is fucked.... wont I be glad I checked first?

thats what I would say, but I would crank till I see the dummy light go off, or atleast 20psi on the 5 sec interval. give it a 2-3 sec cooldown between each crank-over. It's alot better than 5 min, and a lot less harsh on your motor.

Yes of course it would, oil goes from pickup, through pump, through filter and oil cooler. Like I said I always prim oil cooler lines with I install them. And by that I mean just putting as much oil in the lines and cooler core itself as possible.

That's what I did when I installed my cooler. I dumped oil down one of the lines and made sure to hold the end of the line I was filling higher than the rest of the system. Helps push the air out.

Fill the cooler and turbo up with oil and just start the damn engine. Bleed the oil into a big bottle instead of a cup lol.

You're not going to cook a turbo full of oil in 3-5 seconds.
